It was all a set up so that the tag team could break up and HHH could book Austin to be the Jannetty of the team.
Notice how, when they won the titles, it was HHH getting the pin, and when they lost the titles, it was Austin taking the pin.
HHH's big vision for WM18 was to come back as a babyface and beat Austin. Thankfully, plans change.
