Isnt there like a metal frame or something on the edge? Even if it's just wood it is harder since there's less surface area for the impact to go so it goes back to you

There's still padding (usually, unless it's a cheap ass indie that can't afford full size padding), but it's still the edge of the wooden planks on top of a metal frame, so there's no give and therefore harder and hurts more when you hit it.
