From strictly a production end, the New Day have been the only thing close to cross market appeal. They're youthful, they're urban but safe, they're trendy and cool, they play vidya games, their merch sales are through the roof for 3 mid-carders and they're consistent.

If you were going to reward such consistency, why not the veteran of the group. And if you really wanted to make a splash, why not crown a black athlete -- of the New Day, no less -- with the WWE Championship for the first time at the biggest show of the year, WM.

For me the best story they can make out of this is New Day defending their title and Kofi with everything they have. Those two will sacrifice themselves to help him hold onto it.
You can turn the whole faction heel later in that run. I do not fantasy book, I just look at story possibilities.
Imagine Xavier and Big E doing everything they can so Kofi can keep it. And being more and more vicious until Kofi realises that his reign is destroying his friends. That is a good story.

Daniel Bryan's character isn't cool; it's smart. Too smart for top billing. It's actually perfect for an IC or US championship run. And again, who is his foil? Captain Planet? A returning John Cena on the first episode of SD on Fox would do nicely. Drop the belt to Cena and enact that US Open Challenge. John can be a ratings pop until it's time for him to drop it.

New Day are popular, but that's not the only reason. Take an overlooked, inoffensive, underdog vet. Put him in the same spot. He'll get the same reaction. It didn't have to be Kofi, it could have been anyone from New Day, Cesaro, Truth, Ryder, etc. This was almost Mustafa Ali. They've said before they would sooner leave than break up. Although that was when they were over as hell. But they still move tons of merch anyway, so why break up, even now.
