Cole isn't supposed to be a good match commentator, that's not really his role. He's essentially a functionary, responsible for moving the show along smoothly segment by segment. He's a continuity announcer, he just sits in the commentators chair because that's what it's always been structured like in wrestling.

I kinda get what you mean about the old Yea Forums. Site was the best during the late 00’s and early 10’s. Once /pol/ came into existence and spiked in popularity shit did change. There became a lot of spilling over because /pol/fags automatically assume that boards are their for them to talk about their topics in a /pol/ manner. A lot of the identities of boards are starting to gradually change.

Cole was only good around greats. As a freshman commentator with JR and King, he did not need to stand out or lead dialogue. He just followed the flow and did fine.

I also think we just got tired of seeing him. He's been doing this for more than 20 years. It's time to go. Jim Ross was only around for maybe 10 years with some brief periods he had to go away to deal with health, before stepping down from full time duties. King has been doing it longest but he hasn't been full time in ages.

Dude seemed to be a pretty decent journalist based on his early career covering bob dole, clinton, and things like the waco siege, mcveigh bombings and the slav civil war.
I'm not sure how much experience he has with real sports, but it seems like should be capable of transitioning back to a normal role at a tv network.
