nintendo playstation was a joint project between sony and nintendo to develop a CD addon for snes similar to sega cd. the deal fell off but sony pursued the playstation as a different product from the nintendo playstation (PSN). hence PSX. playstation X.

It's called Playstation. PSone for the redesign. PS1 thereafter when a followup exists. PSX for its development codename which is a shorthand which obviously stuck with some people and journalists/publications.

Whoever calls it PSX is fucking stupid, you do not call the OG PS3 the PS3X, right? The actual PSX was another model entirely, the the PSOne is the smaller one.

In a casual conversation you'd rarely need to specify which of the two models you're referring to as it is isually about PS1 games, if you are talking with someone (audibly, not on text) you'd still say "PS1", no fucker will say "Ummmm do you mean the original model or the actual PS1"? And if it happens, it's rare.

PS1 on written text, PSOne if you want to specifically reffer to the smaller model for some reason and just simple Playstation whenever the conversation is already about that timeframe so there would be no reason to specify which PS iteration it is.

Man we were broke as shit when I was a kid and our house flooded and what do my cool as parents do with the insurance payout instead of fixing the damage? Buy us the new SONY PLAYSTATION, which they always referred to as THE SONY. Me and my dumbass brother and sister thought it was called that so to this day the ps1 in our house is THE SONY. PSX comes from "PlayStation eXperiment", the original codename for the project. PlayStation was no longer an experiment by the time the PS3 came out.
