I miss the range Sonic games used to have. Characters were still zany and delivering one liners with a fairly serious threat and backstory. But it was self aware and knew it was fucking Sonic the Hedgehog game so it never dwelled on that for too long. Adventure 1 and 2 are both like this and only each have one or two serious moments. (Tikal's backstory, and the Death of Gamma after "Saving" his brothers in 1 and Gerald/Shadow/Maria's backstory in 2).

The range these games had made them really enjoyable because the legitimately told great stories. I just fucking hate how all Sonic games starting with Colors feel like they're written like a bad sitcom. They don't need to be super serious and edgy, look what happened with shadow. But delivering that combination is why the Adventure games are the best story wise period.

When I was a a kid in the early/mid 2000s I remember learning to not believe reviews because IGN rated Sonic Heros above the GC SA2 port. It still fucking floors me that the Metacritic for the DC of SA2 is almost 89 and the GC one is 73. The only thing I can think of that is messed up in the GC one is the voice lines and no big cameo.

Sonic really went downhill after they brought shadow back the next game after he "died".

They should have waited a game then had him come back in SA3. Probably the biggest missed opportunity of all time. I played Sonic Heros as a teen and don't think it's the worst game, but it's one I never go back to. No denying it was the beginning of the end.
