Tbh when I think of edgy shadow I usually think of his modern presentation, in modern games shadow's whole character is just a simple "hurr I'm mean and evil sonic" like you'd think from games but in his SA2 and even 06 depiction he's like, one of the only sonic characters that actually has an explicit story and arc to his personality.
SA2 in fact was willing to introduce and wrap up shadow's whole story including him losing his sense of arrogance and even telling sonic that he believes that (at least in his own definition) sonic is the ultimate life but then they were like "oh fuck we just made a marketable new character and immediately killed him lets get him back in heroes and then it started to fall down from there.

Shadow ends Heroes maybe thinking he's an android. He starts StH remembering Maria and the Ark, slowly learning about SA2, Gerald, and Black Doom. Of course he's not going to brood in Heroes, he's just following Rouge.
In his own game, he has all these different factions telling him who he is and manipulating him with pieces of his past. By the end of that game, he says goodbye to Maria and Gerald and becomes his own person.
