I have a self imposed restriction that I can't use summons. I was fighting him right now and managed to get the boss HP to somewhat midway. Currently on a strength build.

Mohg spear is quite strong to almost all of the bosses. I just spammed nihil between the two and I beat them in one try at lvl 125

The trick to these guys is sleep. Use a sleep pot on one and then beat the shit out of the other. Alternatively, learning to parry will help you out.

Do people still stubbornly not use their spirit summons even for fights like this

Not him but i beat them with spamming hoarfrost, no summons. I was a str build with a greatshield though but I think you would get a similar result with swapping hoarfrost and bloodhound. Just hit them when they're afflicted with cold

Same as above. Just dual wield 2 of those large thrusting swords like the godskin stitcher or any other kind of weapon with a keen infusion, put on your best armor and jump attack + L1 them. Eventually you'll get good RNG and beat them.

Just put one of them to sleep and enjoy your 1v1. Or bleed them out; that shit procs super fast.
I get having trouble with them week 1 but they've been solved now.

The great epee works just fine, you can get it on limgrave. For extra damage just throw in the claw talisman.

Definitely an overhated fight and not that annoying or difficult as people claim imo. I was getting pretty tired of reused bosses by this point but I still liked this one. Gargoyle duo or Crystallian Trio are infinitely worse than this.

I light roll through fatty easy. Just don't mid roll, fat fuck.

If you're STR, the Raptor of the mists ash let's you counter any direct hit with an instant jump attack. Tons of frames, acts like a 100% block, spammable with no downside, and allows ducks under some attacks. It also blocks the fat one's rolls and even things like the chariots at the hero graves. It feels cheaper than bloodhound step at times but it also adds a little more depth allowing you to directly counter bosses mid combo, and ducking under an attack feels cool.

Is frozen armament good enough to build up frosbite?
I'm considering going bleed + the spell /resin just to have the easiest time posible after my greatsword run

if you play this game like a normal person (blind, no op weapons, not overleveling) this boss and rennala for magic users is a big blemish on a otherwise okay experience.

The only hard part is Tubby's broken spin.

Don't listen to him, it has a normal thrusting moveset and it's Art is one of the most fun ones to use in the whole game.

There was nothing really wrong with Gargoyles either. The second one remains quite passive for long enough to kill the first one. If you get poisoned just cure it. Gank fights in this game aren't as bad as they used to be.

you wouldnt but odds are you dont have a op weapon. Hell i used the grafted dragon for half of my playthrough the first time.
