Also, the Erdtree path is blocked and Morgott likely wouldn't approve of the means to open it. Really, even beyond stoking the forge, killing Maliketh is a douche move to the guy.

No you weren't. Rykard unironically planned to eat you and you beat him down in retaliation, which actually fits their group's principles. As for Mohg, you were never supposed to enter his palace and doing so was a hostile gesture. Most of all, you're literally tricking them so you can take their Great Rune in your pursuit to become Elden Lord.
Sure, you don't get a choice in that narrative, but acting like they had no reason to attack you is just plain ignorance on your part.

I like ER for what it is, but I always felt that the player character being a Tarnished has very specific connotations in-universe that limits the scope of what you're actually "allowed" to be in the story. From your allegiances and how the characters would view you etc.
Compare that to say, Bloodborne where the only narrative rule imposed on your character is that you're a Hunter.
