Kill the mage summons and use their drops at the blacksmith if you need a boost to slay the mage

Realize that 2d dark souls was a mistake

It's been too long since I played it to give much specific advice, but it wears its Dark Souls and Castlevania influence on its sleeve, so as long as you're familiar with those games you shouldn't have any trouble sinking in. One thing to keep in mind is that your religion DOES matter, since it functions like Covenants, and each "bonfire" is tied to specific ones. If a sanctuary isn't claimed, it'll become tied to the religion you currently have. Going to a sanctuary that belongs to a different religion limits what you can do. You can switch religions if you want, but you'll become an apostate of your previous one and it'll lock you out of whatever you'd done to build those sanctuaries up beforehand. You can use a special item to wipe out a sanctuary and convert it to your religion, but you have to survive a gauntlet of fights in the process.

If you go melee, some bosses have very high resistance to either blunt or slash, so it's good to have two weapons.
Do not hesitate to level up your choice of weapon: transforming it into a better one later only cost one level of upgrade.
