Because they changed with the times, redesigned Sonic, and turned the series into something it isn't.
Jam's Sonic World was the correct road to go down, but they brought in edge and kaiju which nobody other than autistics cares about.

It's because they refused to make more Chao gardens, and they paid the ultimate price. 06 would have probably been serviceable if it had a chao garden.

Mismanagement caused SEGA to go third party.
And mismanagement also changed the Sonic series.
Mario is still a success because the series never changed. It retained it's identity while exploring new paths. Sonic completely changed.
