>“Once I went to dinner with Gabe,” explained Faliszek. “And he was beating me up, that um…’if you look at zombie movies’ [Newell said] ‘Night of the Living Dead is about racism…Dawn of the Dead is about consumerism.’” >“[George Romero] had purposely made those movies about things kind of like, to talk about them, and [Newell asked] ‘What is your movie about? What is your game about? What’s your zombie story about?’” said Faliszek, “I’m like, ‘Well, you know it’s about working together. It’s about the game itself, it’s a reflection of the game. Of you know, in the zombie apocalypse what are you going to do? >“We’d kind of get pushed more and more,” recalled Falizek, “because I remember [Newell] said ‘well let’s not do zombies, zombies are just…cheesy, right? They’re just really cheesy.’”
how did this retard create one of the biggest vidya companies of all time? like bitch, what the fuck is half life 1's message?
gabe was right, zombies are a generic and cheesy cliche that people rehash because it's easy. left 4 dead was good because the gameplay loop was good.
Brandon Ross
>"zombies are just…cheesy, right? They’re just really cheesy.’”
holy shit he's literally like the crying soijack meme
Luke Ortiz
cool bait thread OP. It will get more replies for sure. I agree that Gay Ben is based and is the saviour of our hobby.
Caleb Morris
Retarded, but in the end he greenlit it. I remember EA liked the concept of Brutal Legend, but they insisted on making it about Rap and Hip Hop instead, and they were salty bitches about it, when the devs refused.
Eli Sanchez
>Dawn of the Dead is about consumerism
wat
Carter Harris
I don't know OP he sounds absolutely correct to me
Ayden Smith
>how did this retard create one of the biggest vidya companies of all time
because he capitalized on holding one of the most anticipated games of all time hostage to force his shitty anti-consumer vidya sales platform onto the public
Luke Miller
jesus christ my dude, the movie kinda hits you over the head with it
He's right though. Look at the Walking Pleb They were so bland, they just became a MacGuffin to justify why human survivors are horrible to each other. At one point I forgot they existed.
Connor Bennett
Aren't these guys on bad terms with Valve? I would take what he says with a grain of salt.
Owen Turner
Why is he a retard? Media needs to have a point. If you're just making something to be "guys shooting zombies", even an elementary schooler can create a better story than you.
Your media should have a point. A theme. This is the most basic fucking element of storytelling, user. Gabe is entirely in the right here.
>Gaben has the same critical analysis of the zombie genre as a Film 101 student ha ha people actually just wanted to see survivors blowing the heads off of mindless zombie hordes, though. once zombie shit goes up its own ass and gets too pretentious about itself, it gets dropped.
Matthew Gray
just because other people make shitty zombie franchises doesn't mean that zombies are the problem
Justin Wright
>Night of the Living Dead is about racism >“[George Romero] had purposely made those movies
Boldface lie. The script didnt specidy a race for the MC and Romero mentioned multiples times he was hired because he was the best for the role and the racism thing was not planned but rather an accidental consequence of casting.
>If you're just making something to be "guys shooting zombies", even an elementary schooler can create a better story than you.
Sure, but it makes Gaben a big hypocrite since HL1 didn't have any deep message
Jacob James
i wish i could be 12 again
Nolan Powell
>what the fuck is half life 1's message? half-life 1 is an anti-government horror half-life 2 is a libertarian propaganda
Adam Gonzalez
EA had virtually nothing to do with Brutal Legend's development. The game was 90% complete by the time they stepped in and decided to publish it. Also no one every fucking asked them to make it about rap or hip hop.
Hudson Gutierrez
too much shit Horror in general as a genre suffers from it, because people just keep releasing shit. There are diamonds, but they are fucking rare. L4D is unironically one of those. So shining in fact that when Back 4 Blood released, it was so shit that L4D2 got it's little Renaissance
Well, despite his opinion, he was still either eventually convinced or just said fuck it, so that's why. Putting your own shit aside and ceding to someone else's idea when you're convinced it works is good bossing. Bad bossing is having an opinion, hearing your guy out to the end, and then REEEEEEing, nonono you can't do that, I won't allow it, noooooo! So yeah. Don't start a company, OP. Save your money for more dragon dildos.
Doesn't have to be deep, just has to be some kind of point. I haven't played any half life game but from an outside perspective, seems to be about rebellion against a tyrannical race.
Carter Davis
I still never bought L4D2 because the jews fucking promised long term support and expansions but then released a fucking sequel literally a year later
Grayson Smith
>“[George Romero] had purposely made those movies about things kind of like, to talk about them, and [Newell asked] ‘What is your movie about? What is your game about? What’s your zombie story about?’” Based mother fucker, he knew 'zombies' are a very shallow, generic and soulless motif for a story on it's own, he only didn't envision the gameplay using it as a perfect scenario for a fun survival co-op shooter. If you look at the deluge of soulless zombie media today including lots of generic vidya, you can see he's absolutely correct.
William Hill
Who gives a shit if they are cheesy? If the game is fun and the setting makes sense, you don't need a fucking message or having to preach to the player.
Anthony Watson
>the jews fucking promised long term support and expansions I don't remember this anywhere. It was just a bunch of faggots screaming at Valve for (supposedly) trying to make another game and saying they were cancer like CoD or BF.
Ryder Hernandez
Let's be fair. Left 4 Dead would be better if it used monsters other than zombies. Like dinosaurs or mutants or aliens or whatever.
Lincoln Baker
Would have been could if each level had themes like that.
Colton Sanders
kys furfag
Hunter Garcia
Like Space Marine does it? It has ork mobs and chaos space marines.
Michael Stewart
Gabe is right, but him trying to push the devs to justify the enemies being zombies helped the team flesh them out from schlocky walking targets to an omnipresent threat. If Turtlerock was not pressured, L4D would have been a forgettable zombie game.
>takes place in a shopping mall >being surprised it was about consoomerism
Liam Rivera
based Gabe nice ho good l4d turned out to be, though
Carter Torres
In his defense, zombies were a really overused trope in the 2000s
Cameron Wilson
>The company plans to add new scenarios to the game's initial 4, as well as new bosses and weapons. "There were strong hints at a flamethrower coming not long after launch," 1UP reported after talking to Faliszek.
Gaben lied. it's been 14 fucking years and i'm still mad
it was 2008, they weren't quite beaten to death yet
Henry Campbell
It was cashing in before the trend really picked back up. Zombies were dead in pop culture since the 80s and RE helped bring it back along with 28 days later. It was a smart move to question whether it would sell.
The first one is about secret government projects, overeager scientists and what happens when it goes horribly wrong and dips a little into themes of player agency. Nothing about it is especially deep but it's done well enough. It's sort of a take on the concerns surrounding the Manhattan Project.
Andrew Lewis
How this game was called? About wwii and dinosaurs? It was quite fun but not as good as l4d
Landon Richardson
>Game where furry amazons try to rake you by force >Big amazon mommy furry babes >Crying foxy furry babes >Jumping rabbit furry babes Fuuuuuck, zombies ruined it!
Luke Phillips
for the life of me i will never understand why the fuck anyone like the walking dead tv show and the world war z book. both are absolutely retarded
Carter Cooper
>Gaben lied. it's been 14 fucking years and i'm still mad. Good. Stay mad. When people forget about developer fuck ups they end up buying bullshit like back for blood and further ruining the industry.
Jordan Torres
Obviously he okayed it in the end, what theme do you think convinced him? I'd think maybe "cooperation". You have to work together to make it through the stages, but the zombies also have teamwork elements themselves with like the tongue guys pulling you in while the others rush you.
Sometimes people overthink stuff, though. Not every fucking game has to be a thoughtful examination about the human condition.
OG Doom is a perfect game. It doesnt need Doomguy to grab a demon skull and go 'Alas poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio' , and then ponder about the meaning of fate- is it his destiny, nay- his DOOM to fight the endless forces of hell?
Grayson Long
you guys are retards
Caleb Thompson
wow. have you really never seen a romero film?
Oliver Hughes
even back then, people thought consoomers like you'd find in shopping malls back in their heyday were braindead.
Jayden Long
Remove all the good aspects of Left 4 Dead and you get a lame zombie game, basically Half-Life but without any of the nuance. Ever play a cheap Source SDK map filled with zombies? That's what gabe was afraid of. And he's right, though because of this fear L4D came out really good.
A cheesy as this sounds taste is not easy to make especially in regards to HL mapping.
Cameron Garcia
Based, actual auteur showing hipsters how it was actually done. He deserves all his success. Half life 2 was actually about fascism and now le antifa and the leftoid establishment is using it as an instruction manual.
Liam Jackson
Walking dead comics series was good (if you are 14 year old) tv series was straight to shit.
Brayden Williams
I bet you apologize to the server when your order is wrong
Evan King
m8 i was like 13 when I saw that movie and I figured it out
Owen Young
He's right though
Joseph Barnes
gabe wasn't pushing for a big message, he just notes that zombie shit usually has a deeper theme about them, and since L4D would lack that it's just another zombie game. L4D was a good game but it doesn't get indepth lore discussion.
Evan Bennett
They are not zombies. They are infected.
Henry Robinson
nowhere in that article does it say any of that noise you were spouting. it did get dlc with extra maps, which is all this article promises. idk if servers were dedicated or not. you missed out on one of the best games of all time and kept seething for years all because you cant read. embarrassing.
Tyler Kelly
Aren't they NOT zombies in Left 4 Dead though? Pretty sure it's just people with a human form of rabies isn't it?
Oliver Russell
>world war z book >haha helicopters can just use their rotors to chop up zombies and still stay airborne >haha the marori of new zealand did better against the zombies using melee weapons than the major powers with aircraft, armor, and artillery
as a military nerd, WWZ triggers me hard
Lucas Clark
>Valve boss >"I've got a bone to pick with you!"
Robert Butler
i want to know what the monsters would have been if they listened to him
Logan Harris
are they really zombies though? they're not risen from the dead and they're fast and angry like the infected from 28 Days Later.
Alexander Martin
hes right
Ian Carter
Gabe looks more and more like Bill Gaines every day
Lucas Butler
mutants or possibly some sort of mutant aliens ala genomes or something. killing floor had mutants.
Logan King
The point about The Walking Dead was the people. The zombies help frame the existential threat of the show, it is just a force of nature that can be managed under the right circumstances. The real threat are the people who are trying to survive the apocalypse. But the Walking Dead TV show died when they killed off Carl, who was the main character of the comic as it is his story. Also how they did it was so uneventful and stupid, that they practically killed him off screen.
What are you talking about? Left 4 Dead 2 released and it's one of the better FPS co-op games of all time :) Thanks for playing the beta, btw
Matthew Baker
theyre infected, not zombies. but really the difference is negligible and mostly semantics.
Bentley Davis
ZOMBIES! ZOMBIES! I LOVE THE WALKING DEAD WHEN THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE HAPPENS I'M GOING TO TEND THE COMMUNAL GARDENS AND KEEP THE POETRY CORNER CLEAN, HOW ABOUT YOU?
The first season of walking dead is goat rest is utter ass
Liam Richardson
...So Deep Rock Galactic or Vermintide?
Angel Hernandez
>Half Life 1 message There's no important message here, but the game is fantastic, not everything needs to have a "message" It's a fun game with great game design, thats all. Portal and Half Life may contain some message but its was never about the message its about fun game design and pushing tech.
Blake James
>, what theme do you think convinced him? they gave him knives and sex
Luis Jackson
>But the Walking Dead TV show died when they killed off Carl, who was the main character of the comic as it is his story. You're not wrong but it was dead before that because they started using it as a vehicle for wokeshit instead of trying to write anything compelling and relatable, similar to how GoT sold out.
John Williams
>The real threat are the people
I never got this shit. If the world is collapsing, you'd want to make as many friends as you can instead of killing everyone you see
See a guy walking down the road scavenging? Makes more sense to talk to him than kill him. Maybe he's a fucking doctor, maybe he has valuable information. Cooperation works far better than conquest
The remake is way different than the original then because that's the one I watched. with the baby zombie n shit
Colton Lee
That pic explains it. Good old fashioned shitty media.
John Lee
youre a fucking idiot and will be among the first to die because you cant see the reality of resource scarcity. friends are hard to come by when everyone is starving.
Cooper Miller
>but it doesn't get indepth lore discussion. Good. Look at Fromshit, most of the people discussing le "lore" don't even play the games or they watch some faggot tell them what to think.
Kayden Rivera
*literally makes up an element out of pure air that lets it do whatever it wants, just to spite you*
