It's subjective, I like alot of their elements, but at surface level they're basically ogres for the bad guys to kill, designed to be the bad guys, yet very utilitarian when you further into their design

If you're talking early UC the mobile suits are actually very durable, especially the Gundam, since they have to survive ballistic rounds. The further you get in the timeline though the less important armor becomes because all the armor in the world can't stop beams, so suits are lighter to be more manueverable at the cost of a human with a bazooka being able to deal a little damage to them

Sure but I felt the whole section was so tame. For something that was suppose to be devastating, I don't know why they showed some restraint here. Also again it's too fucking dark and the HDR was washed out as fuck.

Yup, it did a great job at showing just how destructive it can be at the ground level just near where these MSs duke it out. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the director of Hathaway also worked on F91 as an animator which had a similar scene of civvys running from a battle.

They originated as a counter to the numerous Saberfish space fights of the Federation, their primary armament being 25mm machine guns so they didn't need the thickest armor. How, or why they adapted them for ground combat, and how super tensile steel can withstand a round from the Type 61's 150mm cannon I don't know.
