Because the movie directors made it clear to the sonic audience that this was its own thing and not a retelling of sonic games 1 to 1 so sonic and sega fans went into the movies knowing things weren’t gonna be fully faithful to the games which made their expectations and reception of the movies better.

Pretty sure the Wild Things guy that Paramount hired just threw in the obvious basics and references but otherwise just wanted to make another CGI-buddy film and collect his fat SEGA check. Granted it got popular and decided to go a lot further with the sequel, so there's at least an improvement going on that many still appreciate instead of the first film being a fluke over changing a horrific design choice into an accurate one.

The real funny bit, though, is that IIRC when Sony was producing there was a staff of legitimate Sonic-nerds attached who were aiming for some PG-13 film that outright said they didn't wanna do a Smurfs film. Dunno how good or cringe that could've turned out.

Honestly that movie was so bad it makes the turn around to become interesting again, and that is not even going into what i heard about its developments years after i watched it, it's a clusterfuck.

There is an entire new generation in Hollywood now that knows how to make video game adaptations. The boomers could never figure it out because they were out of touch with fans.

Because they're not decent. I know people like to make fun of pic related (and rightfully so), but the two Sonic movies can only really be explained as a typical baby movie with Sonic in it. And by baby movie, I mean a movie designed explicitly for little children. The second one is an improvement over the first and it's a GOOD baby movie (Knuckles is a highlight), but it's still got major issues (Tails is nothing but an exposition dump who says "Only SONIC would do something like that!", all of the human bits in Hawaii were Direct-to-DVD tier, etc.)

Sonic has a lot of hardcore fans who are now adults. Those fans have kids of their own and want said kids to like what they like. The people who made the movies went out of their way to make the fans happy even though it was obvious that was not their original goal. When they saw it worked, they simply doubled down on making fans happy in the sequel. The lesson here is that making fans of a franchise happy is good business. Sadly, that is a lesson that is often ignored in Yea Forums, Yea Forums and Yea Forums.
