You know, I see threads where people defend old FF games like 8 and 13, or even older, from all criticism YEARS after they came out and I wonder if that's my future. I defend 7R from all criticism day and night, and have done since release. Before release even. Will I still be doing this in 20 years? Is this my whole life now? Does hopelessly trying to convince a handful of anonymous people on Yea Forums to agree with me that one of these games is actually great and everyone who thought otherwise was just wrong really matter that much?

FF8 is a game of extreme highs and lows. At its best it's a fucking masterpiece. At its worst, it's a half baked mess.

I think VIII has a cool gameplay system but the story is just absolutely trash. You can't make a JRPG with a big choice on how to actively go through it's systems like VIII does where you can either steamroll most of the game if you know what you're doing or just utterly fail for not wanting to learn, then make the best OST in the series, and then just shit upon all of that with the worst plot line and characters the entire series has seen. Even if Laguna is one of the most based characters the entire franchise has seen, he can't carry the entire game on his back.

the system is good because it lets me build my characters using magic I got directly from the world and is legit fun menu autism
the system is also bad at the same time because drawing takes too long, the character customization is not really there (all you do is big number = big DPS)
this is partly salvaged by the fact I can get resources to build my characters from like 3 different means

overall, I like the junction system but I wish it was refined / got a sequel

I never got why people liked building your character instead of growing a premade one. Like half of the games all ended up with your characters being pretty much the same apart from their overdrives and a dedicated healer/buffer who could be whoever the fuck you wanted.

I genuinely like VIII more than I do IX, replaying the former made me like it more while replaying the latter caused the opposite effect. Uematsu's best OST by far too, and best mommy as the final boss.

The story could use some polish but Squall ranks with the best of them when it comes to FF Protags.

This is exactly what happened to me as well. 9's flaws are much more jarring than 8's, especially once you get to the third disc - the plot falls apart and the battles turn to insanely slow dogshit.

I have no clue how people can say Cloud is well developed character. He has a cool mental illness twist to his character, revealing the truth about his past is still one of the most kino moments in all of FF, but his personality is non-existent. He's not that good a character.

Absolutely agree, the WHATEVER meme has always been a thing, but the level of vitriol for Squall only hit the level it did because of Spoony.

He's got decent development, it's just that the final step in his character development is coming to turns with his true self, which is that he's just a normal dude. The more complex attitude he had in the early game is the result of sephiroth mindfuckery and by the time you meet the guy without any of his baggage attached you're well into the endgame.

His romance with Rinoa is fine, I'll never understand the hate for that character. She's not standout but she's not offensive either, and she's the only element that brings out actual character growth from Squall aside from maybe Seifer.

No it isn’t it’s too easy even easier than VII because of the scaling it is actually detrimental to level up in this game and if you do then you are forced to tediously grind out spells for junctioning. The world is cool and the story is a wild ride but ultimately there are big parts that feel strangely overlooked like Cid is married to the evil villain and nobody paid attention to this? Rinoa is a terrible female MC and love interest that is only bolstered by the Ultimecia theory which has been denied and then re-implied by creators so nobody even knows, it’s just a theory. It isn’t bad and it definitely has its moments and the OST is 10/10 but it isn’t better than VI, VII, IX or X.

That's the thing that makes Cloud's character though, he is a genuine fucking nobody. His whole life he was just supposed to be a low level grunt who died in that village that day, but he survived and the MC we meet and want to learn more about is the actual one who died, his entire development is him realizing he's not the man he convinced himself he was, and we develop alongside him. He may not be the greatest written and most in-depth character, but he plays his role perfectly, one of the best vidya protagonists.

I hate the story. I don’t remember it too well, I played it at release, but Squall would have been about my age, but he’s just so totally clueless with that chick. I had girlfriends and it was awful playing as some dude scared or clueless about girls. Its was just frustrating and annoying to experience. Squall wasn’t aloof or distant like Cloud, he was just dumb. Then FF9 came out with those goofy characters and I washed my hands of FF for 20 years.

Literally everything in-game points to Rinoa and Ultimecia being the same person. I don't care if one of the creators later came out from under a rock with his WELL ACKSHUALLY bullshit, that I've still never seen an actual direct quote link about.

The mistake you're making is thinking FF is anything above a mediocre series. Even its best games are mediocre or bad. FF8 is no exception.

No, that was Quistis. All Rinoa did was find the Odine bangle among her father's belongings and bring it up to the others. Like "hey, what if we used the ANTI-MAGIC ACCESSORY on the MAGIC-USER", which of course is why General Caraway had the damn thing in the first place. Then they part ways and the gate team leaves to do the mission, while Rinoa shows that she has the balls to attempt to kill the Sorceress by herself, which is consistent with her own history of anti-Galbadia terrorism. Which ends up having zero bearing on the mission, since even after dispatching the two gargoyle creatures Edea sends after Rinoa, Squall and Irvine still have plenty of time before the carousel rises up. Meanwhile, Quistis "Womanchild" Trepe suddenly has a change of heart while AT THE DESIGNATED MISSION POINT, and decides to drag her entire team back to Caraway's mansion just so she can apologise to Rinoa, like that can't fucking wait. She gets her whole team trapped and nearly blows the mission through her own incompetence and lack of professionalism, they only barely arrive in time to deploy the gate.

Not to mention Irvine dawdles and then misses his shot on purpose as well, and he's the real reason the mission fails. Rinoa is an independent terrorist leader under no professional obligation whatsoever, and is the only character with a personal reason to kill the Sorceress at this point, and she's still more professional than the oldest SeeD on the mission. The only three SeeDs that don't fuck up on the sorceress mission include Zell "let me just confirm what organisation sent this presidential assassin" Dincht. The amount of unfair singling out that occurs with Rinoa is fucking ridiculous, people should either hate most of the party even more, or be fine with her.
