The less popularity this board has, the more manageable it is. It's also just plain better to browse a board that isn't constantly inundated with 15 year olds only here for the next big thing. I think it would have been Half-Life 2 before Half-Life 2 was a thing, so just generally remembered a great FPS game that many people say is the best one ever, it'd probably land a lot of "Best Games Ever Made" lists, too.
Hopefully it'd hold up better than the actual HL2

Halo was popular it's own realm in America in the console space, PC had it's own big FPS titles like HL2, Counter strike and Doom 3.

If Duke Nukem Forever released somewhere around 2002/2003 (if George Broussard didn't fuck it over constantly trying to always add new retarded shit) then I think it would've been considered a fantastic title from the early 00's (And a worthy successor to Duke 3D) but it still wouldn't've compared to the powerhouses that were Halo, Halo 2, Doom 3 and Half Life 2. Hell, It probably would've gotten a few console ports too in order to compete with other big titles of the time, but they probably would've been stripped down like most pc to console ports of that era.

Generally i think Gearbox didn't work that much on it besides console ports and removing bugs, there was a lot of content that was cut, some of it came back in the DLC.

George may be an idiot who was constantly throwing away everything done on DNF just to start from scratch, but he was absolutely essential when it comes to Duke's personality. He understood who Duke was supposed to be.

The World Tour release of DN3D where they rerecorded all the lines for Duke has the same issues.
Basically 3D Realms directed every voice session and had Jon St. John grind his teeth while Gearbox let him loose in the voice booth because "he knows Duke"... all confirmed by Randy Pitchford.

Probably the publishers. IIRC they were the reason as to why duke's model was changed to look more Douchy along with an uncomfortably large amount of Skimpy doll woman T&A. Basically turning it into a softcore porn game.

How the game was still relatively half-life like two years before release, no weapon limit, older. more mature Duke model and a shitton of other stuff like that. It's a real shame because the final game could've been good if it wasn't for the publisher forcing their shit down the games exposed neckhole.

George Broussard. One of the creators of Duke Nukem and the guy who was at the steering wheel for DNF. Every time a new cool game came out in the lat 90s he would get so amazed by it that he'd try and incorporate elements into DNF. When he played Half Life 1 he decided Duke needed to have a start just like HL1's start, with no action and only walking around. His co-workers started trying to hide news of new games from George so that he wouldn't get distracted and try to build it from scratch again.

George Broussard, former boss of 3DRealms, it IS mostly his fault that DNF turned out how it did, he kept seeing new games releasing with new features and every time he saw something new he told his team "lets find a way to put this in!" even though it didn't fit and they had no idea how to even begin making the feature, he also insisted that DNF had to be the most cutting edge modern game, and so it had AT LEAST 3 engine changes over the years whenever George felt that the current build of DNF was "falling behind" newer games coming out
the sad part is that DNF really didn't need to reinvent the wheel, it just needed to be fun, and the 2001 build looks legitimately impressive compared to a lot of other 2001 games but that wasn't enough for George

not sure about the 2-weapon system, but I do know the extent of Gearbox's work on DNF because I have files that were leaked from when 3DR went under in 2009
what Gearvbox did:
took everything that wasn't 90% completed by 3DR and cut it outright to save time (they didn't want to bother finishing half-completed features, just polish up the stuff that was already done)
remove Bombshell and replace her with a really unfunny Gears of War Marcus Fenix parody character, who is so bad that I wish they had just cut the "side character" role from the game completely instead of replacing her with that piece of shit
cut the ENTIRE 2nd half of the game to sell as DLC later
re-use the first boss as the last boss; because they cut the game in half, they had to end it on something, so they just re-used the cycloid emperor that you fight in the "game within a game" at the beginning (in the original, the cycloid emperor is DEAD from the events of DN3D, and the only time you would see him is at the beginning with Duke playing his own game)

DNF had so many thing cuts that it actually makes me hate Gearbox with a passion
