Should I get this or F.E.A.R.? I've played about half of F.E.A.R. on ps3 back in the day and enjoyed it. Really want to play it on PC now. Never played stalker though but have heard good things about it. I'm just in the mood for a comfy early 7th gen game.

Why not both?
FEAR is about 4-5 hours of a great campaign plus 1 great DLC and like 2 more mediocre/shit ones. STALKER is very hit or miss for people, you will love it or hate it with maybe the inbetween being modding it to a level you can enjoy it. SoC would probably take a blind playthrough like 15-20 hours since people tend to do other shit during the story so it gives you alot of playtime if you can enjoy it.
get out of here stalker
Kind of a toss-up between whether you want a solid shooter with good encounter design or an atmospheric exploration-based one with heaps of jank. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. vanilla isn't quite as bad as people say, but do remember to play on the hardest difficulty so the damage scaling is less fucked and quicksave often.
F.E.A.R is easily the best 2000's FPS. S.T.A.L.K.E.R in the other hand, is a great immersive sim, not the best, but it's up there with the big ones.
If I were you, I would buy F.E.A.R on GOG, fuck Steam.
Yea, especially right now it's less than 2$
Stalker will give you more bang for your buck, longer, decent replay value, though Fear also has decent replay value.
Overall, they're both great. You can't really go wrong.
pirate them both
You should experience both, but I will say that Stalker is not really a "comfy" game, it requires you to invest quite a lot into it to get the most out of it. It also really needs mods, whereas FEAR can be played vanilla just fine (although there are some modern compatibility issues, nothing major though)
what the fuck stalker is comfy as hell and you dont need mods
FEAR if you want fast paced arcadey action, Stalker if you want an immersive adventure with some light role-playing
You can't really go wrong with either but FEAR's easier to get into. If you're looking for spooks though Stalker wins.
>he didn't get FEAR for like a dollar when Vivendi died
you've just reminded me I got this and still haven't played Perseus Mandate
If you want a game that will last you a lifetime through mods then STALKER
>Should I get this or F.E.A.R.?
Both.
Both are some of the best shooter games ever made.
>played on PS3
the console ports were god awful, and you really don't get the degree of control on a gamepad.
Here's the rookie guide for Stalker.
This is bullshit.
STALKER's top comfy, and does not need any mods.
>play on the hardest difficulty so the damage scaling is less fucked
stop perpetuating this myth
It's still good to play Stalker on highest difficulty anyway.
stalker is too janky, you might not get into it on your first try
Fun Fact- the developers had to dial back how smart the NPCs were, because during testing they would achieve the player's objective within a few in game days.
I've heard this before and I don't believe it.
What the fuck about STALKER is "janky"?? It's a late-00s PC game, same WASD controls you've seen in every FPS title since Quake, and the inventory management is practically a much more streamlined grid system seen in most CRPGs and Immersims since late 90s.
He's right you know.
Originally the NPCs were supposed to truly free roam and even tackle exact same missions as the players would, to the point that they could finish the main story before the you.
Obviously the original STALKER game, when it was still known as Oblivion Lost, was much more ambitious and open-ended, so it kinda fit the bill.
Some other details include NPCs also having to manage their inventory, health, food intake etc, very similar to the players. If the NPC would run out of ammo, they WOULD run out of ammo, resulting them most likely fleeing from the battle rather than staying and getting mowed down.
Fear is a great game at full price. Stalker is one of those games people absolute love or hate, I'd say buy it on sale to if you want to go in blind, or look up some gameplay beforehand. I love both.
FEAR is some of the most inane garbage you'll ever play unless you're a zoomzoom that thinks bullet-timing an entire game constitutes engaging gameplay. STALKER by contrast is a masterpiece in all respects.
Why is it hard to believe? From the very start there is a nearby military camp that will murder the entire starting base if you accidentally alert/annoy the former.
>>played on PS3
>the console ports were god awful
I know. That's why I said I wanted to play it on PC. Not only that, the PS3 version I heard was the absolute worst version of the game and I still ended up liking it. Doesn't matter though.
Thanks to
I didn't realize fear was $1.50 on GOG so I just got both games. Thanks for the heads up bros
>t: zoomer homo
Both FEAR and STALKER are some of the most significant timeless masterpieces of the 00s', and mark the water-shedding moment before casual zoomies took over gaming industry.
Of course you could get both games for absolutely free if you'd use the other methods.
Both of the OG devs are long gone and won't get a single cent out of your purchase anyway.
Get the free modded version with all the areas from every stalker game
Fear has some of the best gunplay to this day and the most satisfying shotgun of any FPS still. Stalker has terrible gunplay. Half your shots will miss even if you aimed perfectly. Yes yes, realism etc, but I play videogames to have fun, not to have a realistic experience and missing when my aiming reticle was perfectly lined up is not fun.
>2005
>not peak zoomzoom shooter era
The golden age was 93 through 00.
Bros I just thought what if putler bombed GSC and eradicated stalker 2 from existence I would never forgive him
>What the fuck about STALKER is "janky"??
gunplay is awful, weapon degradation is retarded, artifact properties are not explained properly, sucks to walk everywhere
which storefront is this?
Fanatical. Humble stumble is a meme.
I did get EU4 and all of its $500 DLC for only 18 bucks on Humble but thanks I'll check fanatical out
don't worry, the team have relocated to Czech Republic
>what if evil stinky pootin stole a casualised microtransaction-riddled soulless sequel from us???
who cares, it's very obvious why GSC are choosing to put out a game now and not a decade ago, the Grygs have run out of money and want to fund their next Ferrari. fuck them
But there is no new content otherwise.
The fanbase pushes more content out on a DAILY basis than GSC managed within a single decade.
If you like an atmospheric open world with not that much in it, then it's Stalker, if you like a more straightforward horror approach then go for FEAR.
One of those games is a masterpiece with tightly crafted level design and ultra satisfying gunplay that honestly hasn’t been topped to this day, with immersive AI that feel realistic as fuck and plenty of horror. The other game is S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Guys, I’ve played nearly every piece of stalker content including mods like Anomaly and such. The only one I actually enjoyed was SOC. Do I actually just not like stalker?
you didn't play the game properly and got filtered
If you want a good linear setpiece shooter, play FEAR. If you want a Russian survival sim, play Stalker. Both are fantastic at what they do.
>One has dogshit gunplay
>Another has great gunplay
Play fear you mong
>is a great immersive sim
>stalker
R.E.T.A.R.D.
Stalker is just highly rated by people who like bleak atmospheric games, but in reality it's clunky and there's really not that much to the game. Took me a couple of tries to get into it as a result. Overall I'd rate it 6/10
Because stalker is a pretty shitty. Overrated by slavboos. Only CoP somewhat resembles an actual 6/10 game
>The only one I actually enjoyed was SOC. Do I actually just not like stalker?
no no, you DO love STALKER.
All those sandbox mods with no plot and real progress? Literally anti-STALKER.
I've been playing STALKER games and mods since early 2007, talking about thousands of hours per each game, and I absolutely adore the vanilla games, but can't stand shit like Analmeme.
>bleak atmospheric games
Sure there's some underlying "bleakness", but overall the Zone's damn beautiful and comfy. Not being pushed around to do shit 24/7 and the gameplay actually remaining very videogame-y and interactive constantly (rather than pushing all these cinematic 2010s shits down your throat) are also extremely refreshing this day and age, no matter that it used to be the norm back in the 00s.
>in reality it's clunky and there's really not that much to the game.
I really don't get what you're saying here.
How is the game "clunky"? The control scheme and UIX are very standard, and there's no artificial walls stopping you from progressing to the end even if you decide to be a total psychopath moron.
And "Not much to the game"? Again, explain.
Not only is the game atmospheric and engaging as hell, but the experience is truly unique, there's plenty of replay value, the mods expand that thousand-fold, and the whole setting and lore honestly can make you think.
Seriously now, is this some new zoomer meme I'm missing?
CoP's a OK game, but it's extremely underwhelming compared to SoC. Way too easy, too open and empty, and lackluster when it comes to story.
>CoP's a OK game, but it's extremely underwhelming compared to SoC

>gameplay additions like achievements, sleep, drugs

>some attempts at balance like vendors not buying shit broken beyond 80%

No, I won't, little newfag.
CoP's only pros are its stability and arguably the most polished gameplay out of the box, together with the well tought out side quests.
Everything else, however, is a major downgrade from SoC and even CS to a degree.
>We aren't talking about SoC you mongoloid
Correct, we are talking about CoP, where you have too much empty landmass, barely any anomalies to make traversal dangerous, too good visibility to avoid any enemy encounters, and too much free loot being thrown at you thanks to random skirmishes happening all around you - by factions that generally don't give a rat's ass of your presence. Whose bright idea was it to make Bandits "neutral" towards you most of the game?
> You found out about stalker after misery release.
Incorrect. I found out about STALKER on a gaming magazine back in 2003, and got the final release in early 2007, like I told you.
I've literally consumed STALKER media longer than you've been able to read, poor little zoomie. My first overhaul mod was Oblivion Lost 2, which sparked a HUGE Stalkan-boom here on Yea Forums back in 2008; literally dozens of simultaneous threads every day. Long before /vg/ even came to exist.
SoC is still the definitive STALKER game, only made better by mods like AMK1.4.
There's nothing weird about preferring the best game in the franchise, and being put off by mega mods that ruin all the good stuff.
>What the fuck about STALKER is "janky"??
1) the bugs, whilst nothing gamebreaking (most of the time) are still jank
2) the vanilla guns feel terrible, the accuracy is all over the place and damage feels pathetic outside of
3) the AI will act weirdly sometimes, with things like characters aiming at an enemy but walking backwards, which isn't strange in itself, but it is when the guy is still walking backwards and aiming in 1 directions when he is half way across the map and you literally can't even see the enemy anymore
4) the physics system can launch things into you if they start clipping
6) the repeating dialogue
"jank" means that a lack of care was put into something and it isn't working properly as a result, but isn't so completely broken that the game stops functioning
SoC is fun but it is honestly janky
>How is the game "clunky"? The control scheme and UIX are very standard
I'm talking specifically about the first one, It's a buggy, unpolished clunker made on an ancient engine, and the AI is some of the worst I've seen. Mods luckily alleviate some of that.
>Not only is the game atmospheric and engaging as hell, but the experience is truly unique
Sure, it is kinda unique-ish and has it's own charm, but I wouldn't really call it engaging.
>there's plenty of replay value
Not really, once you've seen one end, the other paths don't really offer much of anything new.
>the mods expand that thousand-fold
I know that's hyperbole, but lol no
>and the whole setting and lore honestly can make you think
It's more or less a typical nuclear apocalypse setting with vague-ish unexplained phenomena, there's not that much to process unless you're entirely new to such fiction.
Now I agree it's a decent game, but that's all it is. It's not one of the greatest games of all time you people claim it to be and you're just raising first timers expectations, then they hate it, and then they come here and whine how bad of a game it is and how Stalker fans are delusional.
>1) the bugs, whilst nothing gamebreaking (most of the time) are still jank
That's a new description in my books, but alright.
But honestly, there's barely any notable bugs left in the game at this point. Even triple-A games these days have more notable glitches.
>2) the vanilla guns feel terrible, the accuracy is all over the place and damage feels pathetic
I don't agree one bit.
I can only assume that it's people coming from the typical console-shooters nowadays that are unfamiliar with the idea of linear, "RPG like" gear progression and balancing, and do not realize that the game has some pretty detailed, pseudo-realistic bullet physics.
Pistols generally are useless past some ~30 meters, and a sawnoff shotty with buckshot is literally a musket handcannon.
That being said, that all is literal hobo-phase rookie shit. The moment you get an actual assault rifle, maybe pop a scope on top, perhaps even load in some AP-rounds... you're suddenly the god of the Zona.
Even before that, headshots mow down even military troops instantly.
>the AI will act weirdly sometimes, with things like characters aiming at an enemy but walking backwards
Would go to the bug category. You see such stuff even in much more recent, bigger budget releases.
>the physics system can launch things into you if they start clipping
Same as above
>the repeating dialogue
Minor oversight and/or a bug. Not really gameplay affecting.
>SoC is fun but it is honestly janky
So at the end of the day, this is yet another case where the meaning of the term has changed or has not been defined well enough in the first place, resulting gap between generations.
To me, "jank" has always been gameplay-oriented design issues, which may have been made worse by bugs.
>I'm talking specifically about the first one, It's a buggy, unpolished clunker
It may have been back in the v1.0 days, 15 years ago, but the patches did iron out majority of its issues.
I do not get what kind of uneducated plebeian could even try to bash the AI. The A-Life system is widely acclaimed for resulting some of the most life-like, unscripted events in the history of all vidya.
>I wouldn't really call it engaging.
I would, and so would tens of millions STALKER fans around the world. You do not become a infulential cultural phenomena like STALKER without capturing people's hearts.
>Not really, once you've seen one end,
I was not talking about ends. Replay value can often times refer to nothing but the satisfying, dynamic enough gameplay that you want to re-experience, as is the case with games like Doom, RE4 or MGS3.
And I've played vanilla SoC itself some 4 times already. With mods, I've already lost the count.
>I know that's hyperbole
It literally is not. Do you have any idea how many goddamn mods there is for SoC alone?
Even I can't dare to estimate no more.
>It's more or less a typical nuclear apocalypse setting
There literally was no other game based on a very real nuclear disaster event, in a very real world, before STALKER.
Dunno about you, but first time I was playing SoC years ago, and I realized that I was roaming a digital rendition of a very "real" place, even with that tiny fantasy spice on top, honestly got my mind race a bit. I even started doing research on the IRL Chernobyl incident and wrote a paper about it soon after, which honestly seemed to surprise my (real) boomer teachers at the time.
>It's not one of the greatest games of all time you people claim it to be
To that I will just say that you have absolutely terrible taste in video games.
I will by all means keep stating the simple fact:
STALKER is one of the greatest video games I've ever played in the past 30 years, and it's 100% earned its praise.
continuing a bit:
>...you're just raising first timers expectations, then they hate it, and then they come here and whine how bad of a game it is and how Stalker fans are delusional.
Yeah yeah, I've seen this EXACT same cope from the casual console-zoomies many, many times in the past few months. No matter which game, if it's "before their time", not on their preferred system, or simply outside their personal comfort-zone, they always dig out this re-worded version of the "it's OVERRATED!" -meme.
It's not my problem if your experience with gaming is so limited that you consider Souls-shit to be the pinnacle of "RPG combat", or that Far Cry XYZ would be the best thing in survival-shooters. If you have let your brains rot by that decline-era AAA rehash crap, and thus get some major culture shocks playing a game that does not patronize you to the lowest hell, that's 100% all on you, mate.
So once again, I will state this completely non-exaggerated but subjective fact:
STALKER changed my life, and is still one of the biggest reasons to get into PC gaming.
It became a huge PHENOMENA in Europe, and still inspires games and products to this day. Yet no other (non-blood-related) off-spring manages to capture the style and balance of the old GSC's masterpiece.
