SH1 vs RE1?
SH1 just barely.
Clock Tower 3

>entire series vs entire series
completely different approach to the survival horror genre, it's barely comparable, they just have tank controls, guns and knife in common
As franchises overall, Resident Evil is better, but the highs that Silent Hill reaches are much higher than anything in RE.
Comparing the two games directly, it's definitely RE1 > SH1.
RE1 is easier to go back to or pick up and play to me. It is also more of a classic for me, more memorable. Especially those funny lines.
SH1 however is also masterful in its own ways. Mainly its atmosphere and truly spooky sounds and music. It also feels like a bigger game due to the town exploration. SH1 intro is also peak horror kino in my eyes.
Both games are so good that I will just have to pick both. I cannot choose one over the other. They are too good and both deserve to be played.
love em both. RE1 has better enemies though, especially boss fights. SH1 has (slightly) better everything else. tough pick.
RE1 is maybe a bit more novel and fun as a game to play with, while Silent Hill is a more impressive aspirational piece of multimedia. Resident Evil is a game-game, while Silent Hill could have been a novel or a movie but was worked into a game impressively well.
>Silent Hill trilogy > RE trilogy
RE has slightly better combat (none of the OG games in either series has good combat imo) and is somewhat more "fun" to play speaking in terms of pure gameplay but SH has far better writing, story and atmosphere. Also, I hate RE "puzzles" with a passion, they're completely trivial and serve no other point than to just be obstacles while SH had some genuine headscratchers, especially on hard and extra riddle difficulty.
>RE 4 > SH4
There's no point in comparing them with the others, both games in both series' were meant to be a departure but RE4 clearly succeeded much better than SH4 which had an interesting premise and setup but chose to focus on the weakest aspect of the series, the combat, which it didn't really improve on at all, meanwhile RE4 was a revolutionary third person shooter.
>SH series > RE series
While I think RE had better games overall, it was nowhere near as transcendant as SH, I can only imagine what a Silent Hill game could be like if it could reach it's full potential in terms of gameplay which was always somewhat weak.
Tough question. Both have great atmospheres. RE for gameplay, SH for story. Otherwise, it's a tie for me
Both were/are great but that's only if you compare the first game of each franchise. RE franchise became stale because once you've played one or two of them you've played them all. With Silent Hill games you could at least play them for the story which makes them far more enjoyable and replayable.
RE1 is the better game. SH1 is the better horror game.
RE1 is probably better.
Silent hill is a technical marvel compared to resident evil though.
>Silent hill is a technical marvel compared to resident evil though.
Silent hill came out later user. If we're gonna talk about the technical aspect, RE3 was superior to SH on the Ps1
SH4 was doomed from the start
RE is a better franchise and RE4 is the best game but SH1 is better than RE1-3.
Silent Hill has 3 perfect games with 1-3
RE has 2 perfect games with REmake and 4
I would put RE4 above the SH games, but after that SH1-3 over REmake. RE is the "better" series since it's the most consistently good withonly a few truly terrible games whereas SH's quality completely dropped after 3. Even tho I think RE is the better series, I respect and hold the original SH trilogy closer to my heart than the RE games, and I started out as a huge RE fanboy.
ranking autism is dumb as fuck
Why are you comparing a shooter to an actual horror game?
i like them both a lot
maybe silent hill
Unironically RE never truly changed, SH meanwhile spent a lot of time trying to recapture the feelings of SH2
My wife's of course.
For combat Resident evil, for atmospere, Silent Hill.
American developers don't understand Silent Hill and Konami doesn't give a shit
>20 years later
>SH3 still looks great
Only one of the Silent Hill games was made by burgers.
I play SH for the atmosphere and story.
I play RE for the action and spectacle.
which one?
Homecoming. Shattered Memories and Origins were made by britbongs and Downpour was made in Czechland.
I thought american devs made Homecoming, Origins, and Downpour?
sh 2,3 haven't played sh1
Homecoming, Origins, Shattered Memories and Downpour were made by americans.
None of Team Silent's games did that, 2 was a once off thing for them but it was also the one that was most acclaimed by everyone so that's why all of the third party games basically revolved around "character with emotional baggage goes to silent hill and confronts his literal demons". While the I always preferred the psychological approach of 2 as opposed to the occult elements of 1 and 3, none of the games after 2 that tried to emulate it were ever as poignant.
Shattered Memories wasn't that bad
My mistake then, I should say games not made by Team Silent
I played SH1 recently and beat it and I can't believe anons here think they can compare the two.
The only thing I can say is similar are the controls.but even the combat is so different. And the horror atmosphere is different too (fighting zombies in tight enclosed spaces vs fighting monsters I'd open foggy area)
Hell even the puzzles are different (one required combining itemes while the other is riddles)
Only one of these series is still alive
Shattered Memories was pretty kino imo.
Hell frozen rain falls down
More games need to based off alternate endings
Because the western devs were too stupid and didn´t go all out like Team Silent. SH2 has a depressing atmosphere unlike the others but also has a lot of occult references and they actually made the character guilty of something.
>The canon ending of Downpour has the MC not even killing the pedophile that raped and murdered his son because he has to be a "good guy"
>The bad ending of Origins has Travis being a serial killer because...he is, ok?
>The bads ending of Homecoming has Alex´s dad alive out of nowhere killing him or him becoming a Pyramid Head out of nowhere
And don´t forget that almost none of the endings of those games have any sense (the bad endings of course because the audience has to know which ones are the canon ending). The cutscene just starts out of nowhere
The western devs also didn´t got the meaning behind the Maria ending and thought James actually ends in a loop
Downpour was made by Euros, not Americans. It had promise during development but looks like it ended up being janky shit. I'd like to play it one day though.
I actually liked origins, probably because they used the same engine as 2 and 3 so it very much felt like a SH game unlike later installments.
>The bad ending of Origins has Travis being a serial killer because...he is, ok?
This one is actually decent, if I remember correctly that ending implies that Travis was the one of the bosses that killed other monsters, which lines up whole facing your demons theme and kind of makes sense if you interpret the whole "they look like demons to you?" thing from 3 as genuine.
>SH has far better atmosphere
Far better? Really? Far better than the mansion and police station? With those musical scores?
Homecoming was fucking terrible though. It was worse than Origins.
SH 1 is both better as a horror game and, dare I say it, more fun to play.
RE 1 is more challenging though. SH is pretty damn easy.
>With those musical scores?
Yes
youtu.be
Re is better as a game
Sh is better as something else
Yeah but it doesn´t make sense because canonically he didn´t kill anything, basically that ending is based on three things
>One NPC calling Travis a weirdo for no having a girlfriend at the beginning
>Travis mom being abusive
>The butcher stabbing female monsters in the pussy
The butcher had a great design but didn´t had a reason to exist meanwhile we know why Pyramed Head is there and we know why he does what he does.
But well, at least it´s better than The Bogeyman, that faggot didn´t even had a good design
SH is unironically one of the few videogame series you can call art
Some of the endings in the Team Silent games don't make sense either, like how James came to Silent Hill with the intention to resurrect Mary but still forgot everything in his grief.
James went to town to kill himself but through his experiences there learned about the ritual and how to "resurrect" Mary.
I still think Rebirth is the creepiest ending in the entire series and I wish we could have seeing more of that island
SH 1> RE 2 > SH 2 > SH 3 > RE 4 > RE 1 > RE 3 > RE 5 > SH Shat Memz > SH Origins > SH Homecoming > RE 0 > SH downpour
I haven't played RE 6, 7 or 8. I need to get around to it though.
I haven't played RE0 yet, is it really that bad? It looks nice
I should say for the record that I enjoy every game there to some degree but Downpour. That being said RE0 has a lot of really weird design choices that I just found very unfun to actually play with.
Also the game looks amazing though. Easily one of the prettiest games on the gamecube.
There were no experiences though, the entire game has only passing references to the cult and their God, nothing that James could really interpret without prior knowledge and the rebirth ending is just shoved in there for a second playtrough via a book that has no significance outside of itself.
In water doesn't really make sense either with the way the direction the narrative takes towards the end, why would he experience an emotional uplift and have pyramid head, the physical manifestion of his punishment and guilt kill itself only to then go ahead and commit suicide?
That's not to mention the issue of the timeline and Mary's teleporting body. In water only makes sense if you take the events of the game to be some sort of dream like SH1's bad ending with James killing himself right after killing Mary instead of years passing. In rebirth James having the body would mean that he took it with him to Silent Hill with a purpose in mind, you can argue that he wanted to die with her in a sense and then learns of the resurrection but I don't think that would fit the soft character that he portrays during the game. To me the ominous way he speaks seems in the rebirth ending seems like a better fit for someone who exhumes his dead wifes body or even potentially keeps it for 3 years.
Leave and Maria are the only endings that really work within the context of what you play through.
>why would he experience an emotional uplift and have pyramid head, the physical manifestion of his punishment and guilt kill itself only to then go ahead and commit suicide?
maybe because something happens inbetween those two events in the fucking game
shhh you'll summon Caramel if you keep talking like that.
Agreed. RE0 feels like someone tried to make a RE clone without realizing what makes those games so compelling to play and replay.
Shame because its the most gorgeous RE game but I'd much rather replay Dead Aim or Survivor even than 0. It's so tedious.
