I had Archer's identity spoiled for me before I played it, and then I was doubly disappointed because when Gilgamesh showed up I thought it was another version of Shirou who had mastered projection magic to the point of being able to create perfect copies of all noble phantasms, and then he turned out to just be a new character

He is the greatest hero to ever live and if put in literally any other class besides berserker and maybe assassin, he would instantly win any grail war regardless of opponent.

It's also Harry Potter thrown into the mix as there is a secret society of mages summoning those historical figures to fight against each other. Then there are also elements from Hellsing where the church has badass executioners and vampires and just retardedly strong monstrosities (one of them literally being a flesh-eating forest and so on). Some of the stories are written in GoT style where all factions are shown equally and lots of characters die tragic deaths. The latter is what popularized it in the western mainstream.

I'd say Lancelot or Roland the Paladin would be good contenders, Roland especially since his life story was fucking mental and involved him getting NTR'd so hard that he became a one army murder-hobo in africa before his faggot cousin restored his wits.

A long time ago, a 3 Pureblood Harry Potter Wizards found the Holy Grail. IIRC it was actually the genuine cup of Christ but they did screwy mage things to it to attempt to touch the Root of all reality, which sort of allows a mage to do super cool things.
But they couldn't agree on who should be the one to actually touch the Root, so they turned it into a contest. So they decided to rig the contest.

Anyway, the way they decided to do this is sacrifice the souls of 7 famous heroes from across human history. People like Beowulf and Tinker Bell, and turn them into a mana bomb that blows a hole in reality big enough to reach said root.
They created 7 "class containers" which were capable of containing the associated hero, and artificially inflated the power of the first 3 classes so the 3 mage families who made it would have an easier time than the 4 mooks who summoned the bum classes

The Root is basically there source of the multiverse where all timelines and dimensions spring from. The realm of God if you will. Mages are basically scholars studying a lost art and the Root holds the answer to absolutely every question in mystery across all worlds and timelines. Also, just being able to access a fraction of it makes you near omnipotent.

The Heaven's Feel is the missing piece for immortality.
Humans can't become immortal without a cost. The easiest method, and is the most common among mages is to become a Vampire, Darnic does it by fusing with an infant soul and butchering his personality, etc.
The reason for this is because even if you had an immortal body, your soul is not immortal. It will decay and die while your body does not.

The Heaven's Feel turns the soul into a physical object. If your soul is a physical object, it can be edited, it can be maintenanced. It's the perfect immortality.

A stupid joke turning into this is one of my favorite things about this franchise.

Also, in addition to perfect immortality, because a manifested soul is an entity of essentially infinite mystery, you're de facto invincible unless someone rolls up from the Age of Gods or summons a servant with an Anti-Soul noble phantasm.
Also, because the World is perpetually trying and failing to draw your manifested soul back into the Root, you're an infinite mana engine for the same reason that the Greater Grail was an infinite mana engine.

In the Nasuverse there's a concept called Mystery. Basically, the more common knowledge there is about any particular subject, the less powerful it is. Here's an example
