Unlike other JRPGs, Trails games all take place in the same world and are one continuous story. The main villains are still the same organization in the other games, characters from the previous games come back in future games, plot points started in Sky 3rd become relevant in Cold Steel, etc.

You're gonna miss some references but CS1 and 2 are kinda self contained for the most part so you can play them first if you really want.

They only released the Crossbell games on PS4 a couple years ago. They wouldn't remake them so soon.
Kondo's said a few times he's interested in remaking Sky, but whether that'll actually happen is unknown.

Durante said in his AMA that he's sprucing up the textures and adding quality of life stuff to the PC versions he's doing so I guess you could call them remasters.
