ARR is pretty slow, the second you sub you can't go back to the free trial account and there's a melee DPS you can't start as but you can get in ARR if you don't like the basic selection. Other classes require you to be IN HW or to own the latter expacs.

Someone asked if doton was dps loss in the other thread and the answer is yes. In paper it sounds good, but you have to keep in mind the boss needs to be stationary for the whole thing and you are losing mobility and damage when disengaging. Raiton and suiton with t attack near CD are better in the long run, in EW its a straight waste with fleeting/forked raiju. Also you are not a bard, you depend on your bursts.

FFXIV is one of the two most polished big name "theme park" MMOs , along with WoW. Both have things they do well, and things they do not as well as the other, along with some commonalities. IMPORTANT - if you do not have someone to give you a "recruit a friend" code GET ONE before you actually buy the game. It will give you free shit including an XP boosting hairpin thing that you can use over and over again for every class. However you have to get the Recruit a Friend thing from someone BEFORE you apply an actual game key, while you';re still in Trial mode. Note that you can play a LOT of the game for free in Trial mode - basically the first 2 (ARR, heavensward) expansions up to level 60. However a few things you can't do because of keeping chinky goldfarmers fro, bothering everyone - you can't send tells - personal messages to others, you can't use the marketboard(aka auction house, buying shit from other players on the server ) etc.. which can get annoying, but other than that you can basically get a feel for the game

Yeah, I just recently hit 50 on Dragoon and that was kind of unusual to me how we finally get a combo ender (positional no less) and it has a fucking samurai or ninja looking spray of cherry blossoms. Good ability, debuffs the enemy too but fuck its odd.

join a preferred server, join the novice network or find a group of frens to play with.
try to get one or 2 jobs to the end of ARR's questline before you worry about grinding other jobs.

ARR is not bad, but it is the most anti social and railroaded part of the game

It was kinda weird and left-field when it showed up in FF9 too. Actually I think FFXIV is the first time it's shown up SINCE FF9.

Haven't touched RW or Frontline, but yeah a lot of matches are stomp or get stomped. On the first fight you want to try and get someone with their pants down, for instance, WAR jumps in and in the chaos the RDM jumps your backline, you can try to chain CC the WAR and get his ass or hard switch to the one that jumped your backline. Also don't ignore BLM and BRD
And if you play NIN try to help the team when you see something killable, if not just poke until you can kill, and use raiju to peel for your team

getting the lance mastery that lets you use fang and claw and whirling thrust in the same combo was when the job came alive for me. Still cannot stand having to keep 4 different buffs and that stupid tether though.

lance mastery is a really big step for dragoon, the thing that turned me off it ultimately after playing it as my main for ages was that I didn't like their meter and felt the reward for managing it was really underwhelming

Me again, OP. Okay, here's one more thing. Not sure if you played WoW or not, but if you did you probably knew about UI mods/addons that were a big fucking deal over there - helpful, and officially sanctioned with API by Blizz. FFXIV does NOT do that. There are NO official mods and the devs have a really shitty "don't ask don't tell" status where you never, ever talk about them in public (make sure your guild mates and friends are cool with em etc) and there is no official API. Hypothetically you COULD get a warning or whatever but really thats only if you're the kind of tard who runs damage meters in a group with randos and says FUCKING METERS SAY YOU BAD BAD BAD , which causes someone to report you for being harassing and because you used meters and there for mods to do it, its against TOS. However if you keep quiet and aren't an ass you're good.

There actually is a (useful) addon community and it all starts from here - github.com/goatcorp/FFXIVQuickLauncher - yes its open source and you need to launch the game with that FOSS launcher to have Dalamud addons/mods> There will be a thing in game to let you download, update etc.. them. These are the actually useful mods and vary immensely - for instance, there's a "sightseeing log" you'll unlock in game which means going to very specific places during specific conditions (rain, time of day etc). There is a mod called Tourist that lets you know which areas are "up" and marks them on your map for you if you wish so you can know exactly where to stand and emote to check them off your list. There's a lot of other shit including UI and bar overhauls but suffice it to say this is half the game modding (the other half being the porn body mod replacers and other client side shit, which is separate from this).

You basically have to overwhelm them, through crowd-control or just sheer damage. A LB like Ninja's that can oneshot them past 50% HP helps tremendously, or a defensive job like PLD or WAR.

Expect hundreds of hours of boring jrpg dialogue and cutscenes until you get to a point where you start going through old raid content and enjoy most of that until you hit the end game and realize there's nothing to do for months at a time and unsub.

Okay, its hard to tell sometimes what is a good combo, class to use, who to target etc? . Ever play Summoner? Or is that not so good for Crystal with a smaller user group? I see lots of us using it in Frontlines but that's basically because you can limit break and drop a fucking Bahamut echo so you're likely to at least help your team a little bit even if you die imediately after. Right now I have the following at at least 30
