You can usually tell by how quickly a game stops getting threads once released.

They don't shill directly, they pay marketing firms that have viral marketing divisions, which definitely target reddit as well as Yea Forums. It doesn't take much to keep a thread or topic bumped, so it's way more cost effective to work with a firm rather than hire your own people, because they work on hundreds of placements at a time

I think there's definitely shills and shilling on this board, but the same image alone doesn't mean anything. It's an image board, you have to post an image, and people want to talk about a game so they grab what is likely the top search result from google.
A bot could be way more intelligent than this especially if you figure it's already making its own posts. It would be really easy to refactor the compression on an image every time it posts it so that the hash never matches, for instance

You have to realize that the majority of people that use this site are casually browsing, not posting. Realizing that, all of these posts by people in here (approximately 35, based on the count when making this post), there are probably 300+ other people that will read this thread. That means that if a game is shilled, even if its only in a small thread of 20 posts, it means it gets lot of eyes on it. Usually people are quick to call the shills out which is always funny, but it will still influence a few people.

It and like MGSV were the two types of 2.0 versions o spamming the catalog relentlessly and using mobile phones with dynamic ip addresses to cheat the bump order by inflating threads.

Remember the SIFU threads? Anytime a game from a small developer has a TON of mysterious threads that pop-up out of nowhere, it's shills.

Aside from Ubisoft and Bandai (Elden Ring), the most blatant example for me was Maneater. The devs were shilling a game that is only fun for about 15 minutes for full retail price, and they were being caught on every single lie they told.
