Mother 3 does with trauma, but Earthbound doesn't. Earthbound has an extremely generic story and none of the characters are motivated by anything, it's the setting and writing that is unique.

It's like a 90's kid cartoon where it's all fun and games 95% of the time, but you have some weird or dark stuff here and there that catches you off guard. Earthbound is pretty dark in this respect since all that serious stuff is actually central to the plot

Mother isn't about mental illness but you can't fault people for taking inspiration from a series about mindscapes and loss of innocence and surprise horror and deciding to make a trauma-focused game.
