Just finished Iji yesterday and i really want some other very obscure indie games that are actually good. Hell this game has a lot of weapons, complex levels, different endings, a very good game in general and no ones seems to know or care for it's existence.
So, any recommendations for actuality hidden indie gems? Bonus points for old indie games.
>Iji >obscure Pick one. We had threads on that for ages, where were you? It's not obscure, it's just old and didn't get ports like Cave Story or La-Mulana.
Aiden Garcia
>where were you? On these threads, that's how i discovered the game quite some time ago, but only now got bored enough to give it a try. Also having some threads on Yea Forums of all places doesn't make the game any less obscure lol.
Josiah Cooper
Other places don't matter, we get banned from there whenever we go to other places to try to escape this dump. Newfag. Lurk moar.
Alexander Brown
>Iji >Hidden Gem This shit fucking game was spammed to hell and back a decade ago or more ago. >"BRO IF YOU WANT THE BEST ENDING DON'T KILL ENEMIES" Precursor to Undertale and it's faggotry.
Liam Reyes
I don't think embedded links in images work anymore, but there's this old chart
I mean iji is not exactly obscure so I'm just gonna say crosscode, it's extremely unknown for what it is, which is an extremely polished and well made throwback to classic jrpgs with superb action combat, innovative movement and puzzle design and colossal amount of content to boot if you ever played a jrpg as a kid get it
Julian Wood
Evil Tonight is a good one it's not super hidden though I guess.
Jordan Thomas
Some interesting games there for sure, nice list.
Jack Wright
Boobas too small.
Jordan Davis
Fortune Summoners: Secret of the Elemental Stone I found this game in a thread about hidden gems and the game is really good, but unfortunately it is kind of obsolete for modern PCs, for example it is impossible to set its resolution right.
Oh, and the difficulty of the first boss is absurd. I recommend playing the game on normal unless you are an above average player. youtu.be/gJ09u5keW7s
Dylan Rogers
Slightly obscure games thread? Alien shooter 2
Joseph Hernandez
She was injected with nanotech that can modify her body, so truly they can be any size she wants.
Else Heart.Break() is the most obscure indie game that I actually enjoyed. It's a hacking sim about life in the big city. Really neat mix of slice-of-life elements and a touch of cyberpunk anarchism, without going too deep in that direction.
It's a little bit gay because Sweden, but overall it's still something that I think about 2+ years after playing it.
Can you elaborate? Is the translation of the game bad or inaccurate? Last time i saw a translator take a lot of liberties he kiked the game.
Justin Lee
DROD Tactical Nexus NANG
Luis Edwards
It's mostly adapted humor and references (some went memetic here back in the day like "holy crackers" and "capitalism, ho") but it's not full of SJW propaganda if that's what you're asking. But they don't have a good opinion of their audience that's for sure.
Can a game really be considered obscure if it's on Steam?.
Anyway, >Glum Buster Surreal 2D platformer >All Of Our Friends Are Dead and it's sequel, Au Sable 2D Horror platformer/shooter >Temporal >2D puzzle platformer with time travel mechanic and you are a robot >kiki the nano bot 3D Sokoban puzzle type game
These are all pretty old freeware indie games, so not sure how well they run on modern PCs.
>Can a game really be considered obscure if it's on Steam?. Yes, Steam has such a large library of games that a huge portion of them end up buried without exposure.
Gavin Howard
Some games have less than 10 players on steam. Some probably sold less than a hundred copies.
Chase Clark
Does this actually happen to GOOD games though? Games that aren't just Unity store asset rip open world survival crafting with zombies?
Henry Collins
If you ever experienced anxiety/depression (personally or otherwise) or maybe have a love for hopelessly sad undertones, then play these RPGmaker-like games (I don't know if they're actually made with it).
>Hello Charlotte. The description and pictures online makes it seem like some zany game without much meaning below the surface, and it does have elements of that, but at it's core the game is quite good at handling the subject matter. Very likeable characters too.
>Milk inside a bag of Milk and it's sequel, Milk Outside a bag of Milk. These two are more cut and dry. It's very blatant what it's about and how it'll end, but the way the girl's thoughts are written hits way too close to home.
>Flesh, Blood & Concrete. A game set in Russia where you end up locked in a constantly shifting apartment complex with a strange little girl, who wants you to stay with her. Can't really go into too much detail about it without spoiling, but it's very bittersweet.
If you can relate to the subject matter in these games it'll likely resonate with you, if you can't the endings might feel like a copout though. Also, they look and sound cool. Very good music and very fitting artstyles.
Iirc they actually kept updating the Japanese version and even released a version with more content. They never bothered translating it though because of dev troubles sadly.
Jayden Rodriguez
Iji has heart (and color) but I've always preferred Hero Core for its tighter gameplay. It's just more fun.
Suddenly noticed Seiklus isn't on here. With all the Nifflas on there was it just oversaturated with platformer exploration?
Noah Rivera
Ackshually the nanotech primarily creates a forcefield around her body, not modifying the body itself, hence why she has separate health (body) and armor (nanoshield) stats.
Justin Rivera
I think games that are truly exceptional tend to shine through the chaff, but there are still mountains of games that wind up getting buried despite being sincere products of effort.
Take pic related, for example. Prodigal, an indie Zelda-knockoff modeled after the GBC games. It's not great; the story is inconsistent, the puzzles are one-note, and most of the gameplay systems are poorly thought out in general, but it does a great job at capturing the aesthetic of the games, it's got a good soundtrack, and it's even got waifu systems. Even with all that, it's buried on steam with only 100 reviews. I wouldn't even know it existed if somebody hadn't shilled it in a thread here:
I always keep an eye out when Steam recommendation threads come around, because I almost always wind up hearing about something interesting that I never knew existed before.
Probably. Games that are outside the western axis mainly. For example, I am addicted to A-Train and for me the game is so superior to western alternatives that I can't even play things like Cities Skylines anymore, yet the latest version of the game has like 70 reviews on Steam and it doesn't even appear as a suggestion for those who like city sims.
Ryan Martin
who knows, but they did it anyway
James Hughes
The japanese version is actually on Steam as a seperate product and people have been asking the dev for updates to the English version which he promised will happen someday.
Ryan Anderson
All the time. The same thing happens with AAA games and them overshadowing actually good AA, why wouldn't it also happen here?
Daniel Anderson
>don't kill enemies >ending is annihilator iosa killing and mocking you >best ending
yes because steam is a wasteland of garbage and very few take time to pick out the decent looking electronic in the pile
Zachary Johnson
Return of Egypt. It's an earlier game by the Pharaoh Rebirth developers.
Gavin Nguyen
Thanks for the recommendations bro, gonna look into them!
Exactly, don't care for good endings, fucking killed everyone and then died, that's all.
Elijah Barnes
No? Bro she can "raise" her strength to the point of breaking alien doors, it's a body modification (muscle in thay case), so she certainly can grow some more boobs (or at least making some nano ones).
Owen Sullivan
A very good horror/puzzle one is white chamber, the game even has some titties as a bonus, wish the remastered version didn't get canceled.
The soundtrack is too groovy to be scary for me, but good game. I am retarded and it took me ages to work out that fridge part though. youtube.com/watch?v=cF5AUt8bWOY
Jonathan Moore
nah it's just the nanofield doing it >nano boobs as bad as implants and punishiable by death
Dominic Cooper
I took a fucking hour in one of the puzzles, not even kidding, was one of the first times i actually had to look shit up on YouTube. The music dk be groovy tho.
>punishiable by death The Kotaro agree with this statement.
David Adams
>or La-Mulana The La-Mulana that's contemporary with Iji didn't get ported. It got a 2011 remake that's fundamentally a different game.
Juan Brown
Depends, normally they just aren't very original, not bad per say. If you truly wanna see a bunch of mid and unfinished games just go to gameJolt, it's a mine of shit with maybe some gold in bottom of it.
Little Big Workshop has been fun, nice little factory game.
Christian Adams
Life-changing experience which raised the bar for video games by like 7 notches. But man oh man did I fucking hate it the first 3 times I tried to play it. Then it just clicked and I was never the same.
I don't think it was even a puzzle. There was a fridge suspended in the air and you needed to get what was inside, I tried everything I could possibly think of and got no results. Eventually I caved in and googled it. Turned out that it was actually the very first thing I thought of, I just didn't use the item correctly.
Kayden Foster
The-show-that-must-not-be-named spawned a lot of good freeware games. I never watched the show and for sure the aesthetic pissed me off but where else would I play a proper sequel to Uninvited?
Christian Roberts
Alright, but do you mean the original or the 2011 remake the other dude is talking about? Also is La-Mulana 2 any good?
Alexander Anderson
I miss when lets players would play these freeware indie games. Love or hate deceased crab his game choices were solid.
Adam Sanders
Excellent, equal or superior to the original as far as I'm concerned.
>Solves puzzles off-screen >Screams into the mic
Nah fuck him.
Joseph Collins
They still play them though?
Chase Gray
It's not fundamentally different, just slightly different and a helluva lot easier. There's many puzzles that are exactly the same, the differences are just bosses and a few missing and added puzzles and a few new areas.
Jason Jenkins
My experience with this game was magical. I went in completely blind expecting a fun little metroidvania game with some puzzles here and there. I was completely unprepared for just how full of surprises it really is. I adore La Mulana, and really had a fantastic time with the sequel.
Lucas Gonzalez
Like who? I fell off of let's plays so I thought most either played the popular game of the week or were buddy channels like game grumps.
Eli Robinson
Two crude dudes.
Ryan Fisher
Be honest, is this the kind of game you really need a guide for to get anywhere?
Evan Gomez
yes, unless you want to 3-5x your playtime and be frustratingly lost for 90% of it
Daniel Murphy
You don't *need* to, but you'll want to dip into one anyway. This game is a fucking monster.
