I've never seen such a grind to unlock things in a fucking platformer.

Josh has a job, Nick fell out with some of them a quite a long time ago and called it quits and now streams on his own. Northernlion mostly streams by himself now except when he's chasing clout.

The NLSS model was always flawed since it was basically "come play videogames with me for 3 hours but I get 90% of the views because all the cool shit like jackbox requires you to watch the main stream" so for most guests it was a terrible deal to go there, especially if their main reason to be in it was to make money.
Dumbdog hit it big with amogus and separated himself from the group, MALF went full time solo and Josh was too busy for life, this in addition to having a child NL just decided to shoot NLSS in the back since he basically had no guests left to stream with.
At least he does some streams with the boys every now and then but NL has been zoomerfied so fucking hard that he's unbearable to watch most of the time

It gets much better once you get air-dashing and the spin kicks that reset your dashes.
The game's horrid gold grind essentially encourages you to select heirs that have deformities for that large gold bonus.
I just treat this game as if it were a megaman game rather than a metroidvania.

NetHack had bones files, but were unpredictable and most of the items would end up cursed.

It's pretty good, the controls are good but it feels grindy and more linear. There's a lot more traits and the classes are differentiated enough. Dunno if i'll beat it, i'm at the study atm but the currency price on everything feels super high and repeating for gold is pretty meh

without it they feel so fucking pointless. A longish run can just be a complete waste of time if you make a mistake, it's unsatisfying

It keeps people playing the game longer. Compare losing a round in FTL to losing in Hades. In FTL, you have wasted a solid hour with no gain. In Hades, at least you have more shit for unlocks and didn't waste all that time.

It's kind of strange that this got so much attention despite it being such a bland update of the first game. The first game when it came out at that time was interesting but since then a ton of better games came out in the genre and this "Sequel" is not even attempting to do anything interesting, it's like those 3 dollar indie roguelikes on steam.

Everything about this game is pure padding. Who can possibly find this fun? This game is just a 1 hour metroidvania stretched to 20+ hours. Everything being "????" until you've picked it up once is also extremely retarded especially since you have limited pickups until your max HP is reduced, and most of the +gold% traits are just annoying as fuck making you ruin an entire run just to see what it does.

Somewhat true, but honestly not an issue since the rest of the crew was absolute dogshit on their own to begin with. If it weren't for the NLSS they wouldn't even have gotten any viewer base at all if we're being honest here. Outside of the furry attracting the degenerates like fire does to moths, they all stayed irrelevant for a fucking reason.

It was barely above average and I think it's really overrated judging by the 9/10s I keep seeing. Nice feeling mechanics with unironic artificial difficulty soft locking you into grinding gold and extending playtime. Bland and often reskinned enemy designs, slightly overtuned generic bullet hell bosses. The platforming teeters between cool and obnoxious.

It doesn't really factor into what I think about it, but the "story" was so fucking bad and annoying. I cringed every time I read a journal or an NPC talked to me, every time it felt like they used 3x more words than necessary.

I pirated it recently, it's pretty much Rogue Legacy 1 with some changes/new content/new enemies/new upgrades, etc.

Ng+ bosses get so damn tanky with so much damage. Bosses take like 5 minutes and I can only take 4 hits without any hp buffs. I'm like 50 levels under the enemies with stat spread all around and undergeared but still the grind is real

Is there any achievements tied to not using any Houserules stuff?

I just feel like there's a few options that are drastically better than others so there's no real point not picking them
for example chef gives you like 3x the health other classes have
houserules is cheating, so if you don't care about cheating you could always just use SAM to get achievements

the progression system doesn't make playing a video game any less of a waste of time

~10 hours. I'm not particularly fond of the bullet hell + platforming hybrid gameplay. There are some interesting classes, but on the other hand there are also classes such as mage, ronin, ranger and pirate which are completely uninteresting to play. Unless you apply house rules, bosses are super tanky damage sponges while you deal no damage at all, whittling away at them for an eternity. The solution to this are upgrades, but the grind is incredibly tedious and slow.

you say this like northernlion has any redeeming qualities that justified his userbase in the first place, popularity is completely random and determined by things far outside the control of any streamer who doesn't have corporate backing
