Advance 1 is a cute game but definitely feels like a cheap handheld version of Classic Sonic like those Gameboy Mega Man games. There's not a lot to it.
I respect Advance 2s commitment to speed with all the tricks and the running bosses and the presentation when you're starting or finishing a level but find it terrible to actually play. Cream and Amy were cute additions for what that's worth.
I never played the third one or the Rush series.

Pocket Adventure is better than all of them despite being a Sonic 2 rehash
The Rush trilogy is Advance 2 but with better execution so it's also better than all of them.

Advance 1 was good, if a little standard. Liked Amy's addition, still kinda sad we never got a version of her in Mania
I loved Advance 2 but I have a grudge against it because I never managed to get the Super Sonic ending, fuck whoever decided to make the chaos emeralds not shared across characters
I didn't like Advance 3 all that much but the spritework in that game is something else

2 is one of the best sonic games amazing sense of speed, high skill ceiling, tricks are fucking awesome and add a whole new dimension to the gameplay, Cream is great to play as, but special stage is absolute ass along with just getting all the medals

1 is rock solid, but does nothing to really stand out.
The level themes are eh, the music is eh, but Sonic handles perfectly, and the level design is perfectly fine.
If it didn't feel like an off-brand version of Sonic 2 half the time, it would be stellar.
2 has some serious stage design flaws, but like, the issues are basically single points in each stage that are dumb bullshit and for the most part, levels flow well and feel good to play.
Massive presentation improvement vs Advance 1.
The unlock requirements for shit are fucking absurd though (get all emeralds as multiple characters), especially since getting to the special stages is fucking bullshit.
3 has an even better presentation, but the level design is... something.
The game is still fun because it's fucking nonsense, but like, I can't actually say that it isn't a bad game and not be lying.
I like the graphics, I like the music, I like the dumb partner mechanics, but as a game, it's certainly kind of lacking.

At the time I was more than happy playing the Mario Advance ports, but looking back now with the options we have, it is a bit of a shame that there aren't a whole lot of Mario games the GBA can truly call its own
Mario & Donkey Kong / Superstar Saga are the only ones I would consider booting up now, whereas with Sonic I have the 3 Advance games & Sonic Battle on standby
