On a controlled port. You firewall everything that port can have access to except for what you need. You don't want to forward the port for RDP for example.

It would be more ethical than how they usually do it.

A router gives you only 1 public ip but your local network can have multiple devices running in it. Port forwarding is necessary for the router to know which local device it should forward the data to. This is only a thing when people initialize the connection towards your ip, rather than you initializing the connection towards them like with webbrowsing, online gaming and etc.

Routers route between networks. Switches route to devices. The only thing your router does is take packets from the internet and route to your local network. The switch takes over after that. Your router is actually a combined router and switch.
