I wouldn't say the Xbox 360 arcade without an HDD was good for consumers it was a pretty piss poor deal compared to the current Series S equivalent.
Gamepass
selling two identical Pokemon games for the same price

>Not doing anything risky or drastically different with the PS4 from the PS3 (although rumor was that they withdrew the PS4 from being basically what Xbox One was going to be but retracted it due to backlash from Xbox's garbage E3 launch event, which would make the move even smarter on Sony's part)
>Nintendo Switch as a "Hybrid" console
>Xbox Gamepass
>Nintendo Switch as a "Hybrid" console
lmao its a handheld console period fags will say whatever they want to so they cam dilate in peace at night but the switch was pretty much nintendo waving the whiteflag and abandoning console market
genius honestly as theyre charging console money for google play store quality games lmao
Rent fucking free.
The release of the Dreamcast. You can learn so much about what not to do from that one launch that I could almost believe Sega were tanking intentionally.
>Not doing anything risky or drastically different with the PS4 from the PS3
What do you mean by this? How is it different from xbone. Would you say the same thing about PS5?
Contextually, the Xbox was going to go full on media system. The meme at the time was "TV! TV! TV!" because they were probably trying to replicate what Sony did with the PS2 at the time and they were watching industry trends. The Xbox One was going to require their Kinect camera to operate and would need to be connected to the internet at all times for check-ins to make sure everything worked as it should have and for authentication. It was going to allow hands free operation of the Xbox where you could ask the Xbox to "Play Game" or something and it would do it and other things.
Problem was it was too ambitious. Nobody wanted an always listening device at the time, nobody wanted to have their games attached to a digital account and share them digitally with "family plans" when they had a disc, the price was WAY too high, they focused too much on everything else it could do other than video games and it, among other things, killed all of the good will they built up during the Xbox 360 era. Sony took that opportunity to shit all over MS at their E3 conference, make the "how to trade your game with PS4" video, and come out looking like the good guy while successfully painting MS as the out of touch evil guy who wants to put always listening speakers and cameras in your house with their $500 digital DRM boxes that needed online to work to it's full potential. Sony basically just made the PS3 but stronger and that was all they needed to do. In truth, MS was way ahead of its time considering where we are now, but Sony was very smart with the PS4, which gave it basically a free, uncontested gen (especially considering Wii U was flopping ridiculously hard as well).
>you now remember the 'HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray' war of 2007-08
Lol. Lmao, even.
This.
And Wii Sports.
>Lol. Lmao, even.
god shut the fuck up with this shitty zoomer meme
>90% of Xbox presentation is TV TV TV TV SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS
>end of presentation
>disclaimer that the vast majority of this stuff is USA/North America only
>what support xbox had in Europe immediately dies
>it came down to Porn and video games
I miss VHS, bros
sharing games is the only good thing if you could share the phsical ones
>i buy phsical game
>cousin can download it play it because we have some family account shit like steam
would be the only good thing
Nah I think it's funny, I'm gonna say it all the time.
It may have been the case with VHS and Betamax, but the porn industry actually backed HD-DVD originally.
haha based!! xDD!!
lol lmao even haha
Reminder that adding "retro" to your search is a surefire way to un-poz your porn.
using generic storage devices as the PSP's memory card meaning that rapidly falling flash memory prices would allow users to switch to all digital on the console making it an objectively superior experience as a consumer.
Too bad it was hell on the publisher side so they did the exact opposite for the Vita.
I remember the big issue at the time being that people didn't want to see the used games market killed (particularly places like GameStop and to a slightly lesser extent the flea markets and local used games stores). I agree with you though. If they did the digital sharing thing and still allowed you to share you discs, it would have been alright.
Sega never recovered from Sony doing this.
youtube.com
thats retarded because publishers and developers get 0 from the used market
a pirate gives the same profit a retard does buying used games
>HD DVD vs Blu Ray
>ends up with both sides losing as digital downloads were already winning by then
>gets fucked even harder thanks to Netflix’s domination in the latter half in the generation
Talk about a waste of hardware and plastic
Used markets keep people interested in a company's products. Someone who buys a used game now could buy a new game later.
Samefagging doesn't make your autistic rage any less sad.
I wonder if hd dvd as the default format for 360 would have made the format war a little more heated. Not that it matters anymore, the driving force for media is streaming which the businesses have always strived for. They absolutely hated you could buy it once and own it forever or, even worse, lend it to a friend or have a small gathering.
The data hoarders on /g/ will save us all one day.
25TB and counting. Backed up in multiple continents across multiple legal jurisdictions. They will never, ever, EVER, stop me from owning everything and being happy.
I got this thing on slash clearance for $50 way back when, came with a bunch of movies. You could also use it as a PC disc drive. I still have it in a box in a closet somewhere around here, sold the movies a long time ago.
Is that it? I have about 300gb of music alone and I don't even try.
>Oh this artist seems cool based on this one track, time to download THE ENTIRE DISCOGRAPHY
I have 8gb of Bach.
The funny part was that Microsoft never cared about HDDVD in first place. Microsoft already wanted everything to be digital back then, that way no company would ever be forced to pay physical media fees to any other. Now the fight is against physical media in general
>tourist can't see new IPs
kek lol lmao uneven!!1!
I take solace in knowing this interaction will be the highlight of your day.
Microsoft knew that they had enough cash that throwing money at movie studios to keep a format war going wouldn't hurt them financially at all. Sony on the other hand is a much smaller company and would have to dedicate a much higher percentage of their cash to stay in the fight. Microsoft made such a small amount of the HD-DVD drives cause they knew it was a fight they were always meant to loose.
Including free trial of Xbox Live with Halo2, getting people addicted to onlie console multiplayer and paving the way for paying a fee so you can use a utility you already have.
An interesting legacy of this was restricing many multiplat games to the lowest common denominator for the whole generation. Because Microsoft didn't want customers to need to buy an upgrade just to play games, the HD-DVD attachment was only for playing movies, meaning all games were restricted to the capacity dual-layer DVDs, about 8.5GB (aside from the few multi-disc games). Which meant that from 2005-2012, a whole lot of PS3 and PC games weren't much bigger than ~10GB because they were multiplats which were made to also run off of a Xbox 360 disc.
I freaked out every time I had to swap disks for games like mass effect thinking I'd lose my state between without saving.
The face that ps4 and series s can't just plug a blu ray player in via usb to play or rip or serve as copy protection for games.
Please explain to me why the backwards compatibility and emulation of the series s is a selling point when all my original xbox games like blinx, atv 2 qpr, and demon souls are on disks?
>redditjak
Go back
LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL
What's so funny?
The issue is that retard Mattrick saw the usage data on 360 that said the Netflix was the most popular app on the system and assumed people wanted a console for that. He also pushed Kinect because, well, he was the guy who spearheaded the original Kinect, it was his baby.
The flaw to the argument was of course that there was no reason to spend $500 on a new Netflix+Kinect machine if the one you already had was working fine. So the idea was bad and the execution was worse; the original Xbox One OS was hilariously bad and slow, lacked tons of features, and didnt do any of the cool stuff they claimed it would. The PS4+camera arguably worked better in terms of voice recognition.
>Sony making the PlayStation themselves instead of throwing it away after being rejected by Nintendo and SEGA
makes you wonder what consoles were shitcanned without us ever knowing
lol, lmao even
just like pirates that aren't full jews or aren't burned from supporting companies that release shit sequels
idk man. people seem content with gacha mechanics and not owning anything. If they didn't like it I cant imagine why those games dont make the most money, have the most players, and are the ones that get made
>Xbox Gamepass
This one's gonna devalue games significantly in the long run.
The Atari adapter from coleco. I sometimes wonder why Xbox won't reverse engineer a PS5 and make a similar attachment for the series X.
think bleemcast
the lawsuits wouldn't be worth it, even if they ended up winning
Sony launching PS+ as a legitimately good optional service for the PS3 to prepare a defense force for the second they made PS+ mandatory for online on the PS4.
When they announced that for PS4 everyone's argument was just "well I'm paying for PS+ already" even though you'd have fucking stopped paying for PS+ if it wasn't mandatory because the service imediately went to shit the second it stopped being optional. Cloud saving and automatic updates should be a baseline feature and the free games just all became indie shovelware instead of AAA day olds.
wait you have to pay for automatic updates on playstation?
lmao wtf
This
The PS2 I bought back in 2001 was the only DVD player my family had for atleast another 3-5 years.
I know of a handful of others who were in same boat.
The PS3 was my first bluray player.
The Dreamcast had the most successful launch of any console up to that point. Would you please elaborate
That's the HD-DVD player user, You do remember HD-DVDs and how they got crushed by the Bluray format, right?
I'd argue it may make certain games more valuable.
Specifically a very niche situation where a game has all of the following:
>physical release where it's playable without day1 patches
>gamepass release at the same time
>Game is not super popular, but good enough for a niche following
>eventually removed from gamepass
In that situation, the hypothetical game would then explode in value.
psp uses a proprietary memory format just like the vita
lol. just lol
yeah it literally costs money to update during sleep mode, otherwise patches just d/l when the console is turned on. Not that big of a deal imo but it should be free
Nintendo going balls deep into jrpgs and more niche genres after reaching the normie audience through the wii, ds and games like wii sports. Despite the relatively low attachment rate, it's the reason why Xenoblade is now a series that sells millions of copies, fire emblem was reborn and the switch can just pump out hundreds of mediocre jrpgs and still make a profit. All because some soifag and some roasties picked up zelda, and then a jrpg like game during the wii and ds/3ds days.
