When they were still in the Masters 8, Raihan and Flint both challenged Leon and lost. So it's not like Leon's been sitting on his ass, he's been defending his title from the others.

Ash and Leon look so out of place.

The first season + Orange League is pretty good television. Then you could just watch individual fights like Ash vs Paul and Ash vs Alain if you couldn't be bothered to sit through the whole show.

I read at the time that it was airing that the XY writers built up the Ash victory and then got swapped out for writers for the BW season, who did the episode where all Ash's pokemon started getting oneshotted and he lost.

No, Greninja showed up just to teach Lucario how to synchronize with Ash and turn its Aura Sphere into a Spirit Bomb.

Its Ash-Greninja form didn't show up at all in the episode, and it was retconned out of the flasback.
