Do you prefer games to have a Canon romance or optional romance choices you get to pick from a cast?

Usually they do tend to be a very bland meek nice woman, but sometimes they can pull it off well like with Yuna, or terrible choices like Yukari
While cannon romances do give more room for the story to build up a stronger story around it, stuff such as how Persona 3 tries to push Yukari at you is so off putting since any choice is better than her

They are more carefully crafted, but the problem is that something like that have a certain degree of subjective taste, and if you fail, for whatever reason, you risk the player losing interest in a character that is gonna be at the center and should be your motivation for several things, that would become annoying very fast, and can easily make the player dislike the a significative chunk of the plot

With romance choices I think theyre meant to be like, you're meant to imagine the blanks yourself as their bond grows in the back while you keep going with the real plot
Also the Silent protag was just a 3 Houses thing, Robin is a real character in Awakening with his own wants and desires

This. It's always the same nice, sweet pure childhood friend/princess with little personality beyond blushing around the MC. At least with options you can go for a better character even if their romance isn't as 'fleshed out'.

Problem with this is, aside from above, that most vidya writers aren't good at writing romance to begin with, which is why they take shortcuts such as the childhood friend love interest, usually leading to bland characters and a lack of real development.

P3 is weird in that regard because while they push Yukari for the first half they mostly drop her and push Aigis for the second half.

Canon usually has much more effort and time put into it, but removes the ability to choose someone you actually like so if you don't feel the same way then it's harder to get into it.
I like having a few detailed options, even more if you can change their clothes/hair.

At first I was inclined to say optional but the only vidya romance I really loved was canon (Transistor). I think for it to work both characters need to be established and well-defined to have chemistry, and one or both tends to lack that in games where it's optional.
James and Maria from SH2 was good too. But I never finished it.

It was between Hilda and Shamir for me in GD. Ended up going for the latter because she felt like someone Byleth would actually hook up with.

Tifa was always the favorite for the Cloudbowl though. She was literally created for the sake of being Nomura's waifu. And wouldn't you know, s he's very much the typical vidya waifu in most respects, ie the bland nice sweet childhood friend type.
