When you think about how hereditary traits can suddenly manifest in certain generations, it may bring something to mind. There also might be a hint in Tales from the Shadows, which you may want to reread.

In the end, Emet-Selch, with the help of Lahabrea (who happened to be nearby) and Elidibus (who had fallen from Zodiark’s core), was able to evade the attack by temporarily escaping to a rift between dimensions.

Ardbert was redeemed in what was effectively his third onscreen appearance. You see him show up a bit, but his actual important scenes in HW are at Ravana, the confrontation at Xelphatol, and then the fight in Thanalan where the Warriors of Darkness have their motivation explained and they're immediately redeemed and you help them. He didn't need to be redeemed because he was a good guy whose only mistake was trusting an Ascian when he was desperate for any way to save his home.
