Star Citizen and Squadron 42 updates

>AI (Content)
>Specifically for Squadron 42 (Sq42), AI Content revamped the ‘sleep and bed relaxation’ activity started last year, which enables NPCs to realistically pass time in their bunks or sleeping quarters. Now, an NPC will find its bed and enter it before closing the privacy shutters and sleeping until they’re scheduled to do another activity.
>“We knew early on that, to hit the fidelity we expect for Sq42, we would need to do some R&D on bedsheet deformation. This work is currently underway and, if successful, will allow the AI to deform their sheets when entering, exiting, or sleeping inside them. This is a challenging assignment and expands the complexity of the feature. For example, what happens to the sheets if the AI needs to exit the bed in an emergency?” AI Content
>The initial implementation of bed relaxation includes reading, writing, and watching content on the mobiGlas, which can happen in bed or on the side of it. NPCs can also watch TV if their bunk includes one.
>Work on the arcade machine feature was finalized last month, which included polishing the machine’s male and female animations. The team also utilized the new ‘geometry slaving’ feature from AI Tech: instead of playing a joystick animation, the joystick is attached to the NPC’s hand and moves when it does.
>AI Features started the month working on tech and animations for player takedowns, with the aim to present the Vanduul as furious and deadly killers. For example, if a Vanduul knocks a player down that doesn’t recover quickly enough, they’ll be killed via a dramatic execution-style animation. Relevant animations were first blocked out and then later recorded in a motion-capture session.
>Progress was also made on a section of ‘cat-and-mouse’ gameplayl. In this section, the Vanduul patrols around a room with low while the player tries to avoid them, making as little noise as possible. If it hears you, it will go into ‘investigation mode’ and check the area the sound came from.

>The team also made improvements to the mastergraph, which is the ultimate AI behavior controller. This state machine takes various events as inputs (seeing an enemy, hearing a grenade, etc.), controls the transitions between states, and then plays the associated behaviors. Support was added to override certain states in the mastergraph with specific behaviors, allowing the team to share the same general structure between several characters while maintaining unique behaviors. Previously, this required multiple separate but very similar mastergraphs.
>On the animation side, lots of female retargeting work was completed. The team also looked into getting a fully featured pistol animation set using hand and arm overlays on top of the existing stocked-weapon set. The initial test of the pistol overlay animation looked promising and will save time, effort, and memory. However, full-body animations can still be utilized for specific cases to maintain quality.

>Engine
>In April, the Physics team worked on splitting the batched grid cleanup into two parts (cleanup and defragmentation) to allow for finer control of time slicing. Furthermore, unnecessary computations were removed from the physical world time step, and the time stepping code of living entities was improved. Auto conversion of legacy constraints to constraint attachments was implemented too.
>The Gen12 renderer transition continued, with planet terrain patch rendering being enabled. Render proxies received various improvements and shadow generation was enabled. Support for ‘viewport scaling to render pass’ was added, which is convenient for atlas and dynamic resolution rendering. Various debug UIs were implemented to assist development. For example, a UI to easily control/trigger cube map generation in-game for testing purposes. Lastly for the renderer, material fallbacks for the ‘depth pre-pass stage’ were disabled.
>Gen12 ports of the planet terrain height map and shadow rendering systems were finalized and merged upstream. One of the finishing touches was to rework cascade culling for planet terrain height map rendering so it can run during the submission of draw packets from batch workers (following the Gen12 design philosophy). Gen12 ports of the atmosphere and cloud rendering will commence shortly.
>On the core engine, a potential deadlock in the exception handler was fixed. The clean-up of code using ‘include-what-you-use’ continued. Additionally, a new OS time interface was provided. GPU frame time is now included in analytic events to provide better data on how long actual frame times are on the GPU (ignoring VSync). Furthermore, to simplify deployment, Linux game server instances now also use separate user folders.

>Features (Gameplay)
>The Sq42 Feature team continued work on the master-at-arms, last month getting the character’s behavior working in sync with the kiosk. This includes retrieving the selected weapon from behind the counter or weapon rack, placing it on the counter, and putting it back again once the player has finished with it.
>Work was also done on an in-game application form linked to the character customizer, which allows players to generate an initial version of their character based on the options selected on the form. Support was also given to the Cinematics and Design teams.

God it feels good not to have fallen for Scam Citizen.

Imagine being the guy who's million dollars went straight to bedsheet physics

>Trust a guy who is infamous for holding back projects due to his perfectionist attitude with multi-millions of dollars
The game will never be finished because by the time they gets a fucking pot to look exactly like they want it too, it turns out that they need to rework everything again

I fell for it about 2 months ago.

Bought a $60 ship. I played for about 4 hours and then refunded it. (They give you 2 weeks to refund)

There is so little content that it’s not even funny. This “game” is 100% a scam.
The game runs like shit even on the best hardware and there is LITERALLY nothing to do. You can fly to like 2 planets and 1 space station and that’s all. Nothing to do on the planets either. Almost every single quest is broken. Also, there’s a 1/3rd chance your ship will explode regardless how lightly you’ve landed somewhere. This is apparently a very well-known bug that’s been in forever. One guy said he’s been playing for over a year and probably has to replace his ship 5 times a day because of this bug.
I can’t believe that at one point I was hyped for this game. They’ve done absolutely NOTHING with it over the last decade.

I remember posts where people complained they get spawn camped by one big ship sitting at the space stations and shot everything down that appeared there on the landing pad. This game is a pure mess.

The full thing is even better: mailchi.mp/cloudimperiumgames/squadron-42-update-146756

Its going to be something simple as parallax occlusion isn't it.

I had to check but it is in fact real.

not only is it real it's become a meme among the non-faithful because they've been doing "research on bedsheet deformation" for at least a fucking year now
these "updates" are pure gold, peak "i need to pretend i'm getting shit done"

*MANY YEARS LATER*
>triple-A games take time user
>it has mark hamill and gillian anderson in the single player mode user cinematics will be kino
>delaying it again for the 30th fucking time
>they just want to make sure it's good user and not a buggy piece of crap
it's all so tiresome

Oh no, I had to pay 15$ to experience an awesome and ever-evolving universe and eventually a AAA single-player campaign. The Alpha is already better than 99% of AAA games. Stfu, loser.

>awesome
what game are you talking about?

We got a live one here lads

>first, does anyone have any experience with bedsheet deformation

Now imagine if instead of micromanaging something out of his depth, Chris hired someone like Carmac and we got his patch notes for the game
He could probably knock out the bedsheet crap in 10 minutes and don’t think it’s even worth mentioning

All these words, for two lines of "gameplay", one of which is a fucking bugfix.
How do people continuously fall for this scam?

You mean gameplay updates like salvage?

>The PU team began the month supporting the release of refueling and mining gadgets, including a fix for in-atmosphere refueling. For the mining gadgets, they added a red light to clearly show if the gadget detaches.

>Significant progress was then made on ship salvage, with an improved HUD being created for the Drake Vulture’s salvage mode. They also added additional aiming functionality tailored to the unique setup of the ship’s arms. The Reclaimer’s salvage turrets were also properly setup and can now scrape hulls.

>Work on the UIs for life support and engineering gameplay progressed, while improvements were made to the tools used to set up the resource network, which will make working on it easier.

So when is meshing and alpha of squadron 44 coming out?

How many years has it been? I forgot

>/vg/ groups

That's called an alpha. Not evidence that it's a scam.

The game will also never be finished because it's way way more profitable to never finish than to finish it.

The amount of money wasted on this one piece of vapourware could have revived the entire genre if given to the right hands. instead of bringing space sims back they sucked all the air out the room and nobody wants to touch it.

>We knew early on that, to hit the fidelity we expect for Sq42, we would need to do some R&D on bedsheet deformation.
What the absolute fuck. Just keep increasing features infinitely. Fans will eat this shit up and when it finally comes out and 99% of features are cut they will excuse it.

I don't understand how people still defend things like ships not just being fucking added into the game
none of the ships in game have full functionality so it being unfinished apart from "it can fly and shoot" isn't an excuse
they shit out a new render of some shit every other month and ask hundreds for the privilege of having the jpeg on your account
man the fucking hull series and that big science ship from half a decade ago are still just pngs what's wrong with them

btw by the time the game comes out its graphics will look like shit

Not only did not fall for it but i also recently helped a friend to sell his 200€ investment on this scam to some dude from reddit: got 165€ back which frankly isnt that bad.

Is "bedsheet deformation" jargon for a type of cloth physics? Or do they literally mean bedsheets?

They're inventing a revolutionary new type of physics just for bedsheet deformation, they just need 2 more years and you'll see how great it is.

Does anyone but whales and haters even care about this game anymore? I never see this game mentioned outside of those circles.

what do you think?
