I finished for the first time Samus Returns and for the second time Zero Mission on my hacked 3ds last week. Now I'm trying to play Super Metroid, but either the game is harder or the control scheme is fucked, or both.
I feel like it's a lot clunkier and harder than the other games.

I consider myself a Metroid fan but I've never played the Prime games. I honestly have tried to play Prime 1 but I hate the controls and the tight FOV.

I played it with prime hack and the texture packs, the games were alright but honestly a lot of it is just a slow slog. Even when you try to make the game hard by manually aiming, its still too easy. It feels like its made for children, that applies to both the combat and puzzles. The enemy variety is really poor, and the beams you get are both functionally the same and also too limited in number. Of course it also has the metroidvania pitfalls too, the endless backtracking and "usa da white beamz on da white doorz" is to me simply poor and lazy design.

Overall I thought Unreal Gold was a much better game than the prime series, and accomplished that same "lost in some unknown planet" feeling just as well, except also providing a much more fun combat experience. That being said, the Prime series was still a fine game - especially if you don't mind being unchallenged and a ton of backtracking.

How did you like 3? It was pretty hated back in the day but I think that was because people were really against any kind of moviefication of video games and it had too many cutscenes early on and was too handholdy.

prime 3 worked well enough on the most recent version of dolphin, at least the one downloaded from some site. you can probably find a github somewhere which has a more recent version of dolphin which you would have to compile yourself, but i'm not going to bother with that.

It was allright, the weakest for sure with how linear it was but it never overstayed its welcome

I played on the switch, so I don't know if the advice is applicable to you, but if you are using the joycon/joystick to move, stop. Just use the d pad, it makes movement (especially wall jumping), a whole lot easier. Honestly, my biggest problems about the controls throughout my playthrough were weapon select and wall jumping, but you get used to the former, and using the d-pad makes the latter easier to deal with.

I can see that. The other games do a better job of disguising their linear path which prime 3 trades for setpieces not possible in the other ones.

Although I think no game feels more like you are samus since you have actual control of the ship and it isn't just stuck to one location.
