I have every single secret and enemy placement memorized from my childhood.

user i dont think the zoomers that populate modern Yea Forums care about "shitty old boomer games" or whatever they are gonna post.
i will contribute by suggesting people play some of wolf skevos-jones' wolf3d mods, namely project eisenritter, coming of the storm, and castle totenkopf sdl.
also if you know where to look, try the un-jewed version of blade of agony, a solid wolfendoom mod. jews kvetched and forced them to remove content though so don't download the version on their website.

Wolfenstein 3d has aged like milk

Anybody else ever do that little "back up" motion when opening the exit elevator door, just in case there's an enemy inside?

>try the un-jewed version of blade of agony
you don't actually care about the mod, do you? you just want to bitch about censorship.

Yeah, but it has SOUL

>30 years and STILL no communist equivalent
let's get some equality going and shoot virtual commies too.

Played it for the first time this year and loved it.
>SCHUTZSTAFFEL

I mean he started his post complaining about zoomers and modern Yea Forums instead of actually starting off with positive things to say about the game the thread is based on. He's certainly a secondary at best to both the series and site as a whole.

>hovertank 3d released more than a year prior to castle of the wolf 3d
>castle of the wolf 3d gets all the praise for being “the first fps game”
Why? It’s so disingenuous

Boy, those "Spear of Destiny" mission packs where really bad.

yes i played and beat a mod i didn't care about. fuck i hate your generation so much it's unreal.

Wolfenstein 3d was one of the first games I played, it always gave me a massive headache and eye strain whenever I played it though. Even looking at screenshots today I feel a bit grossed it's repetitive walls and weird gun sprites. I did enjoy the game though despite it making me feel physically ill

You’ll age and die

>Wolfenstein 3D starts throwing them in the elevators in Episode 1, Floor 5, and you're paranoid the rest of the game.
I guarantee that was John Romero's idea.

I watched my dad play this when I was 6 and played it myself on my TI-83+ Silver in AP Calc

Yeah, you have to like run around and explore with no guidance and stuff. And Hitler's eyes don't even flash green, how am I supposed to know when its okay to shoot? There's not even any qte kills for the bosses.

Wolfenstein 3D also has the first ever cutscene in an FPS. Wolfenstein ruined the FPS genre!

YEAH!

I love the closet traps, like the ones in E2M4 where you're forced to kill a guard protecting the key at the back of a large empty room. The second you fire a shot, you wake up dozens of enemies in 6 different closets, who all come spilling out and chasing after you while you book it across the level to the exit.

this is why you should run around stabbing the air to trigger those constantly. yes the knife wakes guards

I was marathoning this game yesterday in anticipation for the 30th anniversary. Got through all 6 episodes in less than 4 hours. Still super fun with the ECWolf sourceport. Mouse movement combined with modern WASD controls gives you perfect control over BJ because you glide along the walls rather than come to a dead stop like in Doom.

Really? I didn't know that.

Cool happy birthday!

There's one in E2M6 as well, with a guard facing away from you and the key on the side facing you. You can slowly inch your way up and try to snag the key without alerting the guard, but if you wake him up, a bunch of SS come after you. Even as a kid, I just shot him on purpose cause I was going after 100% kills and stuff.

It's funny how many swastikas they stuffed into this game. This isn't even the only one, there's like a dozen more instances of this. I think I remember Spear of Destiny Level 3 even had a room where there were a bunch of lights on the ceiling in the shape of one.

>secret area opens up an alternate path to a new part of the level that makes it incredibly easier to fight
Fucking cool.

Poor guy.

Makes it look like a true 3D rendition of Castle Wolfenstein from 1981.

Oh no no no. for real though, I'm still pissed you can't get 100% in Episode 2 because of that stupid Aardwolf Maze.

Attached: Aardwolf.jpg (1920x1080, 255.65K)

It was a full source port with a level editor, shit was really impressive. Kinda buggy though, I remember enemies could see and shoot you through walls sometimes

Easily my favorite version of the game, although I never played the Atari Jaguar version.

>I love the closet traps
h-hey

I'm still waiting for the 3DO/Mac source code release.

They should remake this game expect you shoot chudzis instead

Is there anything better about those versions

Fuck the mutants.

I hate how this animated level end screen is still broken in the Steam version.

Wolfenstein 3D is proof that FPS that are 99% hitscan can still be incredibly fast-paced.

>Steam "version"
It's just the original DOS game bundled with DOSBox though. It's not a remake, so why would anything be fixed?

It worked back in the day, though. I remember it played when I had all 6 episodes on a CD. It's just the one on Steam where the animation doesn't play.

They're pretty good.

It's not the original version. It's a recompiled version that includes the Activision logo.

and thus

doom elevators leads to a higher/lower sector but not entirely 3d

and quake elevators leads to a upper/lower floor as true 3d

Well damn. Fuck Activision I guess

Stop using that word.

Found this from the ECWolf website
>Isn't BJ supposed to be breathing on the intermission?

>Indeed he is, and in the Wolfenstein 3D shareware and Spear of Destiny he does. However, id software accidentally made both frames of animation identical in the latest version of the Wolf3D data files. There is nothing ECWolf can do about this short of providing the missing graphic. The animation is still technically happening so if you grab the image from Wolf3D or Spear of Destiny it will work.

why did jason jones just copy id all the time rather than do something original

Interesting, thanks for the info.

>MobyGames watermark
How old is that copy? MobyGames removed their watermarks years ago.

Wolf 3D did have one small thing that it does better than Doom, the fact that some enemies in a room can be alerted through firing a warning shot to wake them up, while others stay on-guard until BJ enters their line of sight. This has interesting results that keeps the player's head on a swivel, because you never know if there's another enemy around the next corner that might not have been alerted.

Carmack looking sly and cool as hell

Dunno I just grabbed the first image off of google that wasn’t sized for ants

I like how you can alert a few guards in a room who will aggro you, but as long you don't fire a shot, the rest of the guards won't wake up. It creates a little bit a strategy where you can lead the guards out of the room, wait for the doors to close and then kill them, that way you can think about how to best deal with the rest of them.
