People used to love mmorpgs because everyone started the same, you didn't get to look cool or have a ferrari because your mom is rich. You knew the best geared and looking people on the server earned that shit.

This was always the problem I have with trying to make friends in a game. You get people who will sit there and talk all day in cities but they're friends with the people they talk to, when you talk to them you're either ignored or talked to for a brief moment before they move onto someone they actually know.
Trying to join Discord servers to socialize and stuff feels awkward as fuck because then you're trying to push your way into an already established friend group that doesn't care to expand.
Looking any further, with larger communities, you're a grain of sand in a beach, no one cares you exist.

Any friends I have who moved to the game turned into RP types and are very self absorbed and it's kind of annoying, I don't fit in with my friends anymore since they turned into "it's all about me! my character!"

Sadly not exclusive to this game or even the genre.
Though I'm okay with just random encounters in coop games, especially with JP players. It was really good when I had a ps3 and would play Lost Planet 2, RE5 Mercenaries, R6 Vegas, and more with randoms. Just ran into some fun people on those and some even used voice chat.

True for some jobs and some fights, but certainly not all of them. Most Alex and Omega savage fights are much easier than the stuff in ShB and right now. Getting QoL improvements isn't necessarily "dumbing down", for example MCH was certainly more intense during SB but it was also a huge pain in the ass to play and perform well with.

If anything it's much easier to meet new people in FFXIV than in most other online games and MMOs due to the myriad of options in social activity and networking. Not the games fault if you're an autist or too lazy to talk to people.

Not the games fault, there's plenty of stuff to do outside of raiding, especially if you're looking for a more social experience, and if that's not enough then no other MMO will satisfy you either.

Also in their early days it was simply awesome to be able to play with so many people at once. It was a novelty.
With time internet became the norm and mmo lost its charm. I'm not sure what keeps people playing them now frankly.

I've been playing since 2014 but I keep coming back.
My FC is sparse though, everyone plays once a patch drops or has moved on and it's pretty depressing.
I recently left my week 1 group that wanted to prog ultimate dragonsong and honestly I don't regret it really.
There's usually a comfy amount of things to do on and around a patch but really when it comes down to it the only thing to grind is savage and then ultimates afterwards to fill the time.
Just take a break and come back for the patch when new story or content drops, or skip and do every other patch or catch up like 4 months before an expansion.
The biggest thing that sucks about this type of mindset is missing out on clearing certain raid tiers in their prime or ex trials that are old, finding people that wanna help you clear is a pipe dream.
