2 and 4 are "bad" in the sense they were transitional titles, 2 was the bridge from 1 to 3 and 4 from 3 fo 5. They had to experiment in order for the subsequent titles to perfect what was laid out.

Nero is good, and became his own character in 5. Personally, I hope they let go of the old characters because they literally cannot do anything with them anymore. I mean, ever wonder why Lady and Trish have been irrelevant for over a decade? It's because their story arcs are over and there's nowhere left to take their characters. And now Dante and Vergil are pretty much done as well. Nero needs his own game without sharing it with someone else.

DMC4 is an action game, not a combo sim, so it should be judged by action game metrics, and by those metrics it's mediocre at best. Now if there were some mechanics that encouraged combo variation or a better style ranking then maybe, but that isn't the case and intentionally so, because it's not a fucking combo sim (and Itsuno proved it by canning inertia and reversals in the sequel, because they aren't important).
