RetroArch vs. Standalone emulators

Which is better Yea Forums? Let's settle it.

RetroArch advantages:
>consolidated UI and settings for hundreds of different emulators
>run-ahead
>full rebinding
>VRR, BFI, and sync to exact framerate (for example, can match exact framerate of a game, whether it is 54fps like Raiden Fighters Jet, or 61.68fps like TGM)
>huge amount of shaders, filters, and overlays
>audio customization and level
>unlimited save states with save state thumbnails, undo save state/undo load state, pause, rewind, fast-forward, frame advance
>cheat support
>network play
>50+ different hotkeys with full rebinding
>Retro achievements that are uncheatable with an optional hardcore mode to disable save states, cheats, pause, rewind, and fast forward
>updated forks of some emulators that are the best way to play and just don't even have a standalone equivalent (PCE, PSX, N64, Genesis)
>being able to set any aspect ratio or refresh rate
>Rotation/TATE support
>recording, screenshots, and streaming
and being able to save ALL OF THESE, as well as specific core options and global settings, on a per-game, per-core, per-directory, and global basis. That means each and every game can have its own rebindings, shaders, volume and audio settings, run-ahead level, core and core options, rotation, aspect ratio, etc.

RetroArch disadvantages:
>it takes a couple minutes to learn UI

Standalone advantages:
>sometimes slightly more up-to-date
>easier to use

Standalones disadvantages:
>none of the above features or customization or configuration

I love retroarch right now. I was out of the emulation scene for years but got a new work laptop and felt like playing some older games. Set up retroarch and it's fantastic.

I hate retroarch's UI but it's nice having shaders and netplay across most stuff.

>"maybe I really should give it a chance"
>decide to just try retroarch first when emulating a game
>f-zero GX has an immediate and obvious issue
>try dolphin
>works first try

I switched it to the PS3 UI and spent fucking hours ensuring I had the right thumbnails for every game. It helps with choice paralysis when you've got loads of covers to look at.

>Not a good thing
>Useless
>Supported by every emulator
>Pushing a MAME/FBNeo feature as a RetardArch feature
>Not a good thing
>Filler nonsense
>Being a cheating shitter
>Being a cheating shitter
>Only supported with emulators that already support netplay by default
>Supported by every emulator
>Being an attention whore
>>Widescreen
>MAME/FBN feature

Standalone, gamepad configuration on retroarch is a chore and I have got quite several crashes. Standalone is a lot faster to configure, more intuitive. A lot of them show an image of the actual gamepad and you can bind keyboard/gamepad to the same button. Perfomance-wise they are usually better. Used to shill retroarch but no more, it has too many flaws for its positives

>consolidated UI and settings for hundreds of different emulators
Yeah no, the UI is shit and takes forever to do anything. Needs a serious overhaul.
>run-ahead
You didn't beat it
>full rebinding
Every single standalone does this, with better menus for it
>VRR, BFI, and sync to exact framerate (for example, can match exact framerate of a game, whether it is 54fps like Raiden Fighters Jet, or 61.68fps like TGM)
Only good point you've made so far
>huge amount of shaders, filters, and overlays
Reshade does this for standalone
>audio customization and level
You can do this on a system level with any application, how is it a feature?
>unlimited save states with save state thumbnails, undo save state/undo load state, pause, rewind, fast-forward, frame advance
You didn't beat it
>cheat support
I'm beginning to notice a pattern here
>network play
Steam Remote Play has made this obsolete and has no desync
>50+ different hotkeys with full rebinding
Not unique to RetroArch, except for the shitty menu to do it in
>Retro achievements that are uncheatable with an optional hardcore mode to disable save states, cheats, pause, rewind, and fast forward
RetroArch has no anticheat, it's just as cheatable as all implementations of it in standalones
>updated forks of some emulators that are the best way to play and just don't even have a standalone equivalent (PCE, PSX, N64, Genesis)
This is a negative more than anything, progress locked behind a shitty frontend
>being able to set any aspect ratio or refresh rate
Any standalone can do this
>Rotation/TATE support
You can just do this on a system level but ok
>recording, screenshots, and streaming
Are you just trying to fill extra lines up, you can do this with anything.
>it takes a couple minutes to learn UI
not to learn it, it takes a couple minutes to use it, every time, because you need to open 200 submenus for everything.

Standalones work better 9/10 of all situations, and provide superior UIX.

>Steam Remote Play has made this obsolete
You can remote play together with non-steam shortcuts? Holy shit this changes everything
