I like to think they didn't become what they are now out of their own volition and complacency, but rather were legally coaxed by TakeTwo to completely milk dry every single drop of cash from GTAO after millions of underage faggots latched onto it for the better part of a decade at this point. The droves of staff leaving was a consequence of being forced to do things they didn't agree with until they had enough and threw the towel.

True Reason: R* was getting too big for 2K so a company takeover of R* begun sometime after GTA4. Benzies, the technical senior at R*, was cut over some bullshit and Dan Houser was made to leave on the grounds of crunch culture (which is ironic since the crunch was probably due to deadlines set by 2K). A lot of budget resources were moved to online which the Housers didn't even want in their games and that probably didn't strengthen their position in the eyes of 2K. I wouldn't be surprised if GTA6 is online only and set in a gambling based area like, let's say, las venturas.

Then gta 5 came out and they basically stopped making games. they only made rdr2 because they want a successor for gta5 but the online failed miserably.

What drives me so insane is how, despite releasing it literally dozens of times across multiple generations of consoles, they basically do nothing with GTAV's base game each time beyond one or two small features. No extra missions, no fixes or additions to existing missions, no porting Online features over, nothing. It's been the same big empty map for 10 whole years now.

Likewise, I don't understand why this mega developers and publishers don't divide their profits into multiple smaller projects on the chance they could strike gold again, make a new best seller, then expand on that. Even if you made a flop, you would barely notice because of how much Online rakes in every day. I genuinely wonder if it's a headless company at this point. It's the only thing that could explain how the HD Trilogy could happen.
