well obviously, this is only the first 3 minutes

If you played it in Mexican, you did not beat the game

Literally no 10 year old ever thought this would affect combat stats in any way, it was just an intro.

Literally no 10 year old would pick anything other than sword either.

I always liked that you can infer the descriptions as being both positive and negative, like the Shield "repels all", so even good things.

Pick Shield or staff + give up sword is the best combo

Imagine picking anything but Staff. Shieldcucks and Swordsisses need not apply.

Why?

I picked shield...

And yet, it was downplayed hard in the western localizations.
>the power to protect until the very end.
>kind strength to aid your allies.
>an all-rejecting, cowardly shield.

porque no puedo entender lo que dice

weirdo, next you're gonna tell me you didn't pick charmander

What was the actual translation for the sword/staff?

Shield is the best all rounder option and makes grinding and finding rare items easier, but Sword and Staff end up having vastly superior damage output by the end game.

It obviously affects stats. The game literally tells you that you’re choosing your path. It’s only the specifics like ability unlock order that you can’t infer from it.

I cannot pick the shield anymore because I have no friends.

I picked bulbasaur

So what was optimal path to choose again? Pick Shield or Staff, reject Sword, start at Night?

I was like 12 or so when this game came out and even I knew the morning, midday, evening shit meant -something- or at least difficulty related

I believe the best choice is staff drop sword with setting out at night. You get more mp and don’t have the good shield abilities pushed to levels where you’re realistically never going to get them in a play through.

The best option for pure min-maxing is pick Staff, drop Sword, start at Dawn.

Pick Shield and reject sword
Shield gives you more AP and 2 extra accessory slots if you're picking night that's means you're probably going to be doing the end game shit otherwise if you aren't it doesn't matter at all what you choose

>take staff
>drop sword
>your adventure begins in the dark of night, and ends with the rising sun
yes I am based, how could you tell?

i picked shield for one of my no equipment 15h speedruns and it was miserable during the final bosses, was dealing no damage. actually felt like it made it harder

>2 extra accessory slots
Item slots. Also you're losing an MP bar by not picking Staff.

I pick sword cause im an offensive type guy

In all fairness, I have probably beaten KH with every possible combination.

are you me? I picked both the Shield and Bulbasaur

Good thing nobody ever picked the shield on their first playthrough then.

Drop Shield. There's no need for defense.

Who the fuck picks the shield anyways
Glass cannon Sora is always the way to go

I think depending on version (Vanilla or Final mix) Shield is also beneficial to when Scan and Guard is learned, plus the extra accessory slot means you can basically make up for the stat deficit.

Depends on version IIRC i think Final Mix nerfed Shield, it is also worth noting that Magic is good because of the scaling of damage to you Max MP (something i think is never mentioned anywhere in game.) so you do not want to give up on Shield when picking it cause it loses you potential MP from accessories.

So it i think it goes
+Shield -Magic if you just gonna mash normal Attacks
+Magic -Sword if you gonna use special moves and magic.

I mean, was a while since i played but i think Shield gave the was +/- 1 Accessory Slot.

>the power to attack.
>gallant strength which loses to no one.
>a destructive blade to wound others.
tl;dr explicitly says it hurts other people which imo is harsher than just being a blade of "terrible destruction"
>mystical power.
>inner strength, invisible to the eye.
>a ruinous staff that would even take one's soul.

>Picking the Shield for No Equipment runs

Peak retardation considering that a Shield build’s greatest strength increasing the amount of stuff you can equip and how easily you can synthesise.

Best for Speedruns = Sword
Best for Lv1 runs = Staff
Best for levelling and farming= Shield

Watching a walkthrough of 2 with the spanish dub helped me a great deal with the language. Shame there wasn't one for the first game. Actually it's a shame they ditched all the languages they dubbed the first two games in except for English. There was a french and german dub also.

>pick staff
>drop shield
Where are my glasscannonchads at?

>Shield gave the was +/- 1 Accessory Slot.
Shield doesn't give an Accessory Slot. You just get more Items lots for a max of 8.

I always pick sword and give up staff. Also I pick Charmander.

picked shield dropped sword
it was fun
then i learned how OP magic was and picked staff and dropped shield every other run through KH/KH2FM+
14 year old kairi the only kairi worth a shit

thank you jesus
Maybe they could not find someone willing to say "I am already half xehahort" in french?

i like this meme
a lot of truth to it
however madness as well

objectively it's pick staff, drop sword. staff grants 1 MP you cannot get elsewhere. picking sword just gets you combat moves sooner, picking shield gives you two more item (not accessory) slots that you don't need. dropping shield isn't recommended because you start with 1 defense and will get one shotted, assuming you're not playing on beginner.
day/night choice doesn't matter, it's all down to personal preference

You do unlock extra Accessory slots earlier though if you pick Shield though.

I think people forget that the order in which you unlock Strength, Defense and MP boosts is determined by which weapon you pick too (i.e if you drop the Sword, Strength boosts will be much more scarce and so on).

The downside to dropping the Sword though is that your melee attacks will always deal mediocre damage. Dropping the Shield means you have to git gud and avoid getting hit.

Parrying was great in KH1, I liked the tech points. They took that from me in KH2.

I prefer the English versions. They feel more subtle

And the Spanish translation is correct. Why is it always only English?

>because you start with 1 defense and will get one shotted

>he can't dodge

yeah, I'm sure you never got oneshot by guard armor on proud, friend

You gotta think, this was from the same cohort of tr*nslators who were rewriting the entire scripts of FFVIII, FFIX, and X with their own fanfiction, programming obnoxious accent generators for shit like Chrono Cross instead of spending their time on conveying the game's message accurately, and more.

>melee attacks are always bad
no they aren't. you start with lower strength which can be easily made up by grinding power ups..

if you pick sword and throw away shield, you are based and absolutely a chad.

Nope.

At the very end of the game?

>day/night choice doesn't matter
It does matter.
If you pick night overall it will take the least amount of.exp to reach lvl 100 and if you pick day it will take the most amount of exp to reach lvl 100

+Sword
-Staff
master race

>tfw
fuck this I'm learning spanish

Who grinds to 100? Sounds boring.

You should always drop sword as it lines up with Sora's selflessness if there were to come a point where they had to choose between himself, Donald or Goofy to be left behind.

What a stupid mechanic.
