Was this good if you're a fan of the original? I want to play the same thing but slightly different and it's currently on sale.

I also wish they would remake Illusion of Gaia.

Anyone?

I thought more people would have played this since the original was pretty popular.

Never played it. Always thought about it but never got around to it.

Well thanks for the bump at least friend

Fuck yeah, it's basically the original but beefier and with fresh new content. I'm currently in Bloodpool and savoring it; it'll probably take another 20 years until we get more actraiser content so why rush things?

The original is a great game and you can totally play that one.
That said I was very pleasantly surprised by the remake. The combat and action gameplay is something I definitely prefer in the remake. The chain combos. The backdash. And the jump thrust and downstrike. Are all cool. Especially when you can chain them together like chaincombo->jumpthrust->downstrike for even stronger finishers.
The power crystals also incentivized you to actually explore the stages in ways the original does not. And the bosses are have a bit more interesting movesets.

Now the town management and tower defence thing is a lot more contested. Generally I still liked it and it's not that bad for a tower defence game. But it could no doubt feel like it dragged on in the latter half of the game.
In the original the tower defence thing isn't even a thing at all. And the town management is more brief. To some this is a huge plus, but overall I still think the town management / tower defence thing contributes to the game. And honestly, even in the remake you can ignore most of it if you simply don't care to maximize the towns and its heroes and ignore the non-essential quests.
But the thing I appreciated the most was simply that the towns and kingdoms felt a lot more fleshed out with their named characters. Actually gave your kingdoms some added personality which is kind of cool. Makes your accomplishments as you play the game and beat all the bad guys feel more significant.

And honestly, even the awkward visuals at least look a bit better in motion.
And well. I like the 2D art. picture related.

But yeah the remake has its pros and cons. Generally I'd that the core gameplay is stronger in the remake, but that it is simultaneously a less focused and more fluffed experience even though not all the fluff is bad.
The original meanwhile does have a bit less satisfying core gameplay, but it's much for focused on it giving you a more focused experience.
Which you'd prefer I can't say.

Typical Square Enix garbage. Pirate the original.

I haven't played this yet, but they just put out an update
