there's hints and foreshadowing about it in the game. then one of the writers said no, that's bullshit and rather than put the whole thing to rest it only made it stronger
i personally think that they removed this twist during development and leftovers remained here and there

Kitase is the director and designer. Also came up with the original story. There are no R=U hints in the game. The theory was broken down in-depth soon after it first spawned on the internet and proven to be concocted by stupid people who missed basic information, such as Griever's origin and nature. You people are objectively very stupid.

if this "theory" keeps being rediscovered by new fans who are playing the game for the first time today and weren't around for the original discussion on the internet, it could be argued that the game itself "pushes" for players to read certain lines of dialogues in a specific way.

It's never made sense. Plot threads that start during the first seconds after the opening cutscene that Squall couldn't possibly know about continue throughout disc 1 and start unfolding on disc 2 and 3. Ultimecia heals and imprisons Squall to interrogate him about SeeD. She LITERALLY conquered her era to prevent her assassination by SeeD, and one of her motivations for fucking with the past in the first place is finding out why they were after her, which ironically is what makes them come after her.

If you were capable of reading, then you'd know that Ultimecia has her own backstory that's incongruous with Rinoa's. She was shit on for her entire life because the constant time travel bullshit she pulled in the future meant that it was already well-known historical fact that she was going to fuck up the entire world. And being treated like a monster eventually drove her to become a monster. No one even knew Rinoa was a sorceress until very late in the plot, no one connected her with Ultimecia in the game, and she had a very priviliged upbringing. They have nothing in common.

The real issue was that FFVIII's plot was underwritten and rushed to shit because they had already made a bunch of super expensive FMVs and had to work them all in somehow, so despite Ultimecia potentially being an interesting villain she's so hollow that people feel the need to invent their own story for her, no matter how retarded it is or how immediately it's debunked by how little there is in the source material.
