I think part of the problem is that these people are so clueless on how to mentually visualize things that they expect that they'd be able to actually "see" the apple like it's literally projected on to the backs of their eyelids or something. I can visualize the apple down to the droplets of water running down its skin and then completely change how it looks if I want, like suddenly it's being eaten by the singer from Ah-Ha in the Take on Me music video or something. But I'm not actually "seeing" jack shit other than a black void. The idea that they may be able to imagine an apple but not realize the difference between that and seeing it is just as concerning to me as the idea that they have no imagination to begin with.

I don't know whether this is true or not, I think I'd rather want to believe they're just trolling, but stuff like this is a great example why you should encourage your kids to be creative.

Even just reading a story to them and asking them to visualize it might have helped them.

It's not really a thing that can be learned. Some people just don't have that sort of visualisation. There's nothing 'wrong' there they just can't.
