JRPGs

What are some good adventurous/slice of life/lighthearted JRPGs on Steam aside from the Atelier games and DQXI? I'm really burnt out on Japanese writing conventions. It seems like JRPGs are truly where the Z-lister writers and designers go. The extent to which cliches and conventions are regurgitated so unironically is a little mind-numbing. I think pic related was the last straw for me. I am so tired of a group of young (because anything that is middle aged or old is either evil, wrong, or dies) anime characters running around killing god and saving the world while dealing with the most mind numbing melodrama and love stories that only a female neet would enjoy. It is especially bad in this modern Scarlet Nexus, Code Vein, Tales of Arise Bamco styled chuuni nonsense where everything has the edge dial cranked up. When it was just basic JRPGs it wasn't so bad, but now you have these same one dimensional anime characters giving long speeches and preaching on subjectives like racism, ideologies, religion, government structure, etc.. while then turning around and doing DUDE FOOD or BOOBS XD. Every bad guy is just a generic strawman written by a child. I just can't take it anymore. The writing in Persona 5 was abysmal too for similar reasons.

What options are even out there? And no I am not interested in Random Western Indie JRPG About Depression/Suicide/Being Transexual.

>mind completely crumbles at the sight of a paragraph
Ah you must be the target audience of Tales of Arise.

>What are some good adventurous/slice of life/lighthearted JRPGs
I liked Ni No Kuni

>What options are even out there
If you're looking for a good JRPG story, then
>Xenogears
>Black Souls
And if you expand your search to SRPGs/ARPGs too
>Tactics Ogre
>Underwaterrayromano
>Nier/Drakengard

>Black Souls
lol

I've heard the two Ni No Kuni games are quite different from each other. Is it worth playing both or should I just prioritize one over the other? Also isn't it just another generic DUDE CHOSEN ONE GATHERS A PARTY OF KIDS TO TRAVEL TO EACH COUNTRY AND GET A RESOURCE NEEDED TO SAVE THE WORLD narrative? Is there really nothing else a JRPG can be about?

>adventurous
Wild Arms, Legend of Legaia
>slice of life
Azure Dreams
>lighthearted
Can't get more lighthearted than Guardian's Crusade

None. Video games have shit stories, you play them for the gameplay.

ToA isn't edgy at all tho, compared to its predecessor ToB.

If you want slice of life bullshit, watch seasonal's anime. In fact JRPG needs more edge.

>anime characters running around killing god
But you're not killing god in Scarlet Nexus or Code Vein. Also, I unironically loved the cliche storm in SC. They even justified the power of friendship in that game with a in-universe game mechanic. The finale was especially kino.

Maybe I have "low standards", or maybe I just became tired of western writing, especially in RPGs, where it's always a bunch of miserable and cynical sacks of shit that want to murder each other, forming a party and going on an "adventure", if you could even call it that, while preaching about racism bad by using elves or whatever other fantasy race they can, and beating us over the head with garbage "grey morality" which is basically just making everyone a complete asshole. It's the typical "we are so mature" edgelord writing that gets so tiring, that the power of friendship starts to seem like a better alternative.

The story is its one saving grace since it has no production values + the porn and the gameplay suck

It is, but it's charming in the same way Dragon Quest/Atelier games are. Play Ni No Kuni 1, avoid 2

I'm in the same boat as you pretty much and I think I'm just gonna delve more into oldschool stuff after I finish Triangle Strategy. DQV and some SNES classics for example.

Yakuza 7

Complaining about edge is so fucking early 00s.

WE NEED MORE EDGEKINO.

ToA is the most generic chuuni garbage Bamco churned out all month, and was then immediately followed up with their next chuuni nonsense. It is edgy the way Japanese people love it: the most childish mind numbing form of edgy.

Edge is only good if the game fully commits to it instead of flip flopping between serious topics and DUDE FOOD AND BOOBS LMAO, like modern JRPGs tend to do

You're playing the wrong genre if that upsets you my guy.

This. Are there's any other pure chunni edgy games like Monark and Code Vein?

Attached: monark-v1-697031.jpg (1449x1080, 152.13K)

Drakengard fully commits to being schizophrenic garbage, couldn't have come with a worse example.
>hurr le killing children so edge
>LALALALLA THE WATCHERS LALALALA

>schizophrenic garbage
That's what makes it so fun

How is ToA chuuni? It's standard Tales fare, no rape, no war crimes, no fucking gore or anything.

None of the games you listed are even edgy. God this word has lost all meaning over the years because of retards constantly misusing it.

There's nothing remotely edgy about ToA.

Scarlet Nexus maybe, but it doesn't flip flop and Code Vein is made for day one as edge (except it's really not edge because it's not gory enough).

I can recommend Trails in the Sky. It's pretty comfy overall with fun, eccentric characters. Sadly Cold Steel shifts away from some of that and goes more towards edge while having pacing issues.

Play the Trails series. That's your answer. Start from Trails in the sky (the first in the series). They tell a continuous overarching story. Trails of Cold steel is where it gets slice-of-lifey.

Scarlet Nexus isn't even edgy though. It's pretty mild compared to other JRPGs. And Code Vein only has an edgy aesthetic, but nothing beyond that.

The edgiest recent JRPG, outside of Elden Ring of course, is Triangle Strategy because it has war crimes.

Other than that, JRPG is way less edgy than before and it's a damn shame. You don't even see disgusting monsters in JRPG anymore.

There's some mild gore in SC and the monsters actually look like monsters instead of fluffy animals.

Really hope for a SN sequel tbqh.

Also anyone really disappointed with modern Persona and SMT?

They are hip rather than edge.

My nigger, posted it right before me I'll also add: from the very first 10 minutes, I was so glad I chose to play Trails in the sky. The music and writing just fucking blew me away, especially after the fucking nigger-tier silent protagonists of dq11 and p5

>There's some mild gore
I barely remember any gore being in the game outside of some blood here and there, but nothing exactly extreme to be called edgy.
>and the monsters actually look like monsters
I loved the Others design. The were probably some of the more unique monster I've encountered in recent years.

>OP hates chuuni garbage
>recommends fucking trails
What even is this thread

I'd say the edgiest is strangers in paradise ff origins. But in a good, endearing way.

Oh forgot but it's on fucking Epic Game Store.

FFXVI might bring back edgekino.

Might.

Otherwise, I'm waiting for Front Mission remakes and hopefully Diofield Chronicles has some war crimes.

>edge discussion
>disgusting monsters
Can't go wrong with Black Souls and Fear & Hunger
>inb4 Fear & Hunger isn't a JRPG

Attached: Nightingale.png (640x480, 484.53K)

The only edgy part in TitS is Joshua and he gets overshadowed heh by Estelle hard. Only Cold Steel goes full edge mode.

Attached: Josh.png (2200x3375, 2.83M)

Fear & Hunger is a WRPG.

Haven't played Black Souls tho.

Trails is the most grounded JRPG series in existence. Unironically. There is no bullshit, no deus ex machinas. Just reasonable characters with completely reasonable and understandable motivations. Every character is compelling, and the story is compelling, because you can understand everything and why people are doing things. It's the complete opposite of kingdom hearts, where literally anything can happen and nothing makes sense, and the only reason for anything is because Nomura says so.
Kys

Sure, but I'm posting it in a JRPG thread and those tend to devolve into JRPG genre definition threads

>Trails is the most grounded JRPG series in existence. Unironically. There is no bullshit, no deus ex machinas. Just reasonable characters with completely reasonable and understandable motivations.
Yeah I'm out of here

Attached: 1651180660558.jpg (524x468, 51.23K)

There are some huge retards who widen the JRPG definition outside of "RPG made by Japan", but I will always stick to that definition.

monark looks cool but it's ridiculously expensive.

Nice argument. Name one JRPG that doesn't have characters doing bullshit useless things for no reasonable reason.
Even fucking Pokemon doesn't make sense compared to trails. The villains in Pokemon battle you in a fucking cock fight because they want to bully a trainer for literally no reason that any normal human would have.
In trails, no villain is being a nigger just for the fuck of it, and everyone is relatable, to the point where you're rooting for every last character, even as they're fighting each other.

>no villain is being a nigger just for the fuck of it, and everyone is relatable
But that's boring, games need more batshit insane villains

There is one or two of those, but even they're compelling and have you appreciating them, like Zenos in ffxiv

Attached: zenos_bart.jpg (744x1016, 84.33K)

This was much better than I expected.
Explore modern town + bunch of mini-games is great combo. Battle system is unbalanced though.

Could you all recommend me some jrpgs that aren't hentai but with lewd designs outfits etc?
Without dlc I mean
I already have code vein, automata and ge3

Attached: EXzb4xrXgAAnOP0.jpg (1198x921, 127.79K)

Atelier Ryza and Neptunia maybe?

You are way better with hentai for this shit mang.

Why would you play the worst of both worlds? Ecchi jrpgs are not as good as regular ones and not as good as hentai ones
Check out Xenoblade 2 and Atelier Ryza, I see those posted a lot

>on Steam

Why would you limit yourself this much? JRPGs have decades of history on consoles and only very recently embraces PC. Emulate and play the classics.

Retroarch is on steam :^)
I use standalone emulators instead

Any JRPG where final fight is fist fight?

Mgs4 and death stranding

Stop playing the game when you find starship

Labyrinth of Touhou with mods, I'm partial to the bikini designs
Dungeon Travelers 2

TLOU2

Trails of Cold Steel series, but some of it is behind DLC so just pirate it

Attached: sara v.jpg (1024x576, 69.23K)

First one is good if you can stomach the mon combat. Second one was trash and felt like it had 1/10th of the first game's budget and charm. Hell, the first game's Wizard's Companion had more effort put into it than this entire game. I'm still wondering what the hell happened.
