Ubuntu is fast becoming the default operating system for gaming. When will you make the switch?

What's the one-liner to install steam in a chroot
I don't know if it's becoming the default anytime soon, but it's getting to a point where you won't need Windows to game anymore.
once my computer forcefully updates to windows 11
>snap
I hope this shit dies before it can become mainstream
What's the scenario? Are you trying to install steam on a host through a live USB or something?
Come home, tinkertrannies.
It's not worth it.
I would if my mic and mouse didn't use software proprietary to windows and if it was easy to transfer data from linux to windows
Who else here is a fellow Jammy Jellybro?
name a distro better than Arch + KDE
pro tip, you can't
Why not? I just upgraded to Jammy and juggling ppa's is a pain in the arse. Snaps would fix that issue while being more secure than flatpaks.
My biggest problem is how slow snaps are to launch, but that has definitely improved on 22.04.
Based.
Gnome > kde
>try to start game, it doesn't start
>if it does start, cutscenes either don't work or run terribly
>games generally run slower than on windows ("b-but elden ring!" isn't an excuse)
>native linux versions are quickly abandoned if they're even made
>everything non-steam requires messing with shitty programs like lutris and winetricks and other crap just to hopefully make the game work
>tons of games with easy anti cheat are literally unplayable ("b-but it's the developer's fault!" doesn't matter, you still can't play them)
>because of the above, many popular multiplayer games are also unplayable
>new proton versions inexpicably make games break
>japanese games are usually fucked and they barely even work on windows
>good luck with any weird obscure games from sites like itch.io and gamejolt, they're most likely fucked too and no one will help you
>games with gold or platinum ratings on protondb can still have lots of little issues
>games can also just not work at all if you happen to be using the wrong distro
I sure do love the linux gaming experience

When will keknonical give up?
>snap
I don't want that slow ass bloatware
Werks for me. The pain of using windows is far more than the pain of a couple of games being poorly made.
There is no good reason to be still using Ubuntu in 2022.
>ubuntu
Take the redhat pill.
yes
There's no good reason to not use Ubuntu
I see this every time I boot into windows now. When do these """"services""" stop being optional? I just wanna play video games man.
I'm actually play games so I'm forced to use Windows.
what games, user?
Battlebit, Battlefield 4, V and 2042, Halo MCC, Warcraft 3, CS Source community server modes.
I know BF4 and CSS "work" but I had stuttering and mouse acceleration on them.
>snap
bloat
Explain. Snap is more secure than flatpaks, while solving the same issues.
does anyone have a discord where i can ask for help on deck related issues? i tried asking in several threads but nothing.
any linux fellas know if fedora is a better choice? im not afraid of the command line and i had pop os for a few months b4 a bios configuration change broke my nvidia driver and i couldnt figure out how to fix
Post question
At the end of the day you probably won't notice much of a difference. Just find a DE+package manager you like and go with a distro that fits the bill.
is this the right battlebit? EAC launcher didn't complain or anything but I get a message about the playtest being postponed so I can't verify online play for you
don't own BF4 so I can't vouch for that but any system-level mouse accel should be able to be removed entirely either via gui or xinput if you're using X11
as for MCC I think it was working but michaelsoft might've sabotaged it by removing the .so that was added in for anticheat based on some steamdb updates I saw a while back
haven't tried Warcraft 3 but I know other Blizzard games work just fine via Battlenet
i'm struggling to run sengoku rance. i tried running a version i had and the text is all glitchy, then i tried downloading another on nyaa and its window remains completely black even though i can hear its sound
then monster girl quest and the sims 3 failed to install
also, my lutris games i have added to steam with "add steam shortcut" don't actually work in gaming mode, as if their link was empty or pointing to the wrong spot.
there's a gamer-centric spin on fedora: nobaraproject.org
>
the package ecosystem is important for me too. im not a fan of debian's offshoots because debian's package ecosystem is dreadfully outdated and i dont wanna risk bleeding edge. ubuntu is choosing to die on the snap hill too so thats a turn-off
>I know other Blizzard games work just fine via Battlenet
This. I used Lutris to set up WoW and Overwatch and they both worked fine. Overwatch stuttered a bit while it was building the shader cache but that was it
MGQ needs some configuring to get it working
appdb.winehq.org
Sims 3 should work fine, especially if you own it on steam
protondb.com
lutris.net
where do i add that LC_ALL argument on q4wine?
Looking on protondb most of my games are rated gold or platinum, should I beat everything rated silver and bronze before I make the switch?
usually the only things that cause issues are devs who don't enable compatibility with anticheat or japanese games that rely on video files that play through Windows Media Foundation for cutscenes or intros (that can't be disabled)
WMF is being worked on in Wine so hopefully one day they'll just werk
I haven't used q4wine so I'm not sure. You could try bottles too if q4wine isn't to your liking
usebottles.com
It really depends on the game. New world is rated bronze and it works fine.
Also, compatibility is improving all the time. So you could just play games with good ratings and come back to games with poor compatibility later.
>Ubuntu is fast becoming the default operating system for gaming
if there's a section for adding environment variables, that would be the place most likely
Ubuntu is the most popular distro for Vidya already, won't be long before it's the most popular OS for Vidya too.
sengoku rance works with that lc all argument. how do i make it so every time i run it it's loaded automatically without having to copy paste it?
Games not supporting EAC made me go through other games in my library.
Nigga, Linux is 1% overall
Even MacOS has a greater percentage share on Steam
I'd link it but the Steam survey page is down atm probably to update for April data
>Ubuntu
nope, they removed 32-bit library, so you can't play the oldest games at all.
SteamOS is better. I would switch to Linux when Valve finished refining SteamOS for Desktop.
maybe they'll ask for my survey again finally :(
i think i managed to with lutris. good, good
i want to take the leap, but i still play destiny. I just want to switch.
You can make a shell file, then run that shell file instead. At least, that's what I always do.
>so you can't play the oldest games at all.
Wrong
When I was on windows I'd get the survey at least 3 times a year. Sine I switched to Ubuntu I've had the survey once in 5 years. Makes me wonder if the percentage of people running GNU+Linux is actually much higher, but we're not being surveyed correctly
I used to see them a lot and basically never get them anymore
my least favorite thing about Linux is how overcomplicated tutorial authors make things.
Like I wanna learn how to setup this program or something and they got me 12 lines deep in the terminal before I realize I'm just unzipping an archive which I could have done in the file explorer.
Every help and tutorial I've seen insists on doing everything in the terminal when you don't need to.
Terminal is very useful, but just skip through the tutorial until you find what you need.
You should have been taught in school to glance through instructions first before you start executing them.
Also, post example.
fedora is pretty nice
36 should be out next week
That's just the nature of random sampling
There's 10's of millions of Steam accounts and the chances that any single individual gets surveyed is miniscule depending on the sample size Valve chooses
As long as it's truely/sufficiently random, the results can be extrapolated to the greater population
>tried out wayland today
>vsync is always on for the desktop
>turning vsync off in game
>game is still synced to monitor refreshrate
>cannot turn off vsync without setting triple buffering on and introducing input delay
>the triple buffering work around doesn't work for VKD3D
when the fuck are they gonna make a real xorg alternative? wayland fucking sucks, so does xorg, but at least xorg functions correctly. they need to get their heads out of their ass and realize it's shit
inb4 do it yourself
>Every help and tutorial I've seen insists on doing everything in the terminal when you don't need to.
Because it's easy to teach using the terminal. Imagine having to walk someone through doing something on their computer.
>Okay, just download the file.
>Unzip it.. Huh? It's in your Downloads folder.
>Uh... Click on the Start button on your Desktop and click on the Download folder.
>Are you in? Okay, now right click the file and select unzip.
>Did you unzip it? Check the Download folder, your files should've unzipped there.
vs
>Okay, run the terminal..
>Uh.. press the Start button and type 'term', you got it? Okay, run it.
>Now type 'cd Download'
>Now type 'unzip file'
>Now type 'mv file location'
etc
>game is still synced to monitor refreshrate
How are you testing this?
steam overlay, in-game fps counters and mangohud
This. Terminal commands are generally agnostic so they cover all distros, instead of having to make a separate tutorial for each DE and making sure it covers all versions.
tried using gamescope at all? you can set a target sync rate from my understanding
>gamescope -r 30 -- %command%
github.com
I've been running 22.04 with Wayland (AMD) and I don't have this issue. mangohud and steam overlay display fps well above 60.
Oh shit! I don't know when this got fixed, but now I have one less reason to dual boot windows.
oh shid
I had refunded it before when the anticheat caused it to die
>i'm struggling to run sengoku rance. i tried running a version i had and the text is all glitchy,
Try setting your launch parameters to this:
>LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command%
nvidia, so no gamescope (yet)
it's nothing to do with AMD it's wayland and how it works, maybe it's cus i got 2 monitors
im surprised the games launch for you on nvidia
basically nothing that usually worked on X11 wanted to launch at all when I was giving Sway a poke
>Ubuntu is fast becoming the default operating system for gaming.
lol
Might be worth trying with only one monitor plugged in, I've heard that Wayland had some issues with multiple refresh rates.
Also, I mentioned AMD because traditionally Nvidia has more issues than AMD
yea everything ran fine, i guess nvidia 5.10 drivers improved a lot, but its fucking shit
i used
LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8
and it worked
on that note, i got the same frame rate in deep rock galactic in wayland as I did in xorg, i see no benefit in switching for me anyways
