White people

because it's easy

This but unironically

>pictures of anything fiction vs pictures of forests in games
?

Xenoblade 1 gives you a great sense of scale. Stepping out on the Bionis knee is a magical feeling.

can you show me some AAA or even AA games with settings / visuals like those on the left?

because you're a small percentage

All open world fantasy is the same and has no variety or any kind of fantasy environments at all. They are all the kinds of environments you would find on real Earth. No inspiration at all.

Even earth has more interesting environments than these games can imagine.

don't forget the iPhone UI

Attached: modern UI.jpg (4710x2570, 3.54M)

Sad but true. There is a lot of color and inspiration in eastern games but Japan has been in the shitter and is getting worse, so there's no hope over there either.

I'll give you that, but as far as the budget goes I'm pretty sure it was developed on pennies found on the street
anything else?

I can't unfortunately.

thats a good collage on the left some good novels in there

ALL big (AAA) western video game developers are subhumans and they are the sole reason we can't have nice things anymore. they should all be rounded up and culled like rabid dogs for their crimes against humanity and arts.

I have forgotten what a good UI is like.

>spend several hundred trillion dollars on fancy voice actors and super high def graphics and cinematic cutscenes
>one humble indie game comes in and destroys all of them

Attached: come home terrarian man.png (1296x768, 384.94K)

>played for 96 hours then burned out, dropped it
>waited for Journey's End
>launches
>retry it, too much going on, drop it again
>now there's ANOTHER fucking update upcoming
>will retry again
main issue was the inventory management, thankfully in the new patch everything stacks to 999. wish they'd just hurry up with their next game anyway

I'd rather play rehashed movie games than 2d shit.

Attached: 1650656030275.jpg (600x450, 31.7K)

I haven't played basiaclly any of those games but I feel like putting TW3 on there is kinda disingenuous since it's a vital part of the game. I assume the rest of those games(the western games anyway) just tack the shit on and you avoid it as much as possible.

Modern games are plenty colorful.

>what are terrains
This nigger probably goes to the desert and complains it's too brown.

Deserts are usually boring in vidya too

>I can't enjoy things unless they are brightly colored
Literally autism.

>no you can't just want something

Play older games retard

Besides Journey, what game did deserts well?

not about the color, although a part of it is
I just want interesting designs and worlds to explore
a creative modern game I can think of is Caves of Qud, but it's not 3D (and likely couldn't be, much like Dorf Fort)
I don't see games like Oddworld, Planescape or Qud coming out of AA / AAA devs ever

any suggestions? I'm already aware of some games with interesting settings but I'd like to know more

Zeno Clash
Paper Beast
Morrowind
Oddworld
Caves of Qud
Kenshi
The Eternal Cylinder
Planescape
Scorn
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Ico / SotC / TLG
Pathologic
Oblivion: Shivering Isles
Pyre
Myst, Riven
The Neverhood
The Void
Another World

Morrowind is the latest game that had any sort of creativity or inspiration in it's world design. Shame it was a one off and Bethesda decided to go completely commercialized

that's not true at all

Cruelty Squad

Whats a better way to show your inventory than a grid or list, and to show your character than showing your character?

It's because western video games are being made by people who couldn't tell you the difference between an elf and an orc

FromSoft has the best art direction in the industry

it's about the lack of stylization, there's no effort to make it fit the game world itself, it's just purely functional over everything else

Attached: old UI.jpg (3264x1628, 3.53M)

this is probably the best example

Bust out the wii u

For me it's the reason why the interface even exists. Modern games have crafting and gear systems just to make more money because Skyrim and Witcher did it, rather than for any interesting reason. Like look at that Star Wars game.
>menu for equipment
>it's just dozens of reskinned ponchos

Why does BOTW have 99 pages to sroll through when OOT had more actual stuff in less menus? Because Skyrim did it.

back when fonts were so soulful you couldn't even read them, which only added to the immersion

Attached: character.jpg (649x470, 107.92K)

Because anyone can simulate reality and the average person isn't turned off by it.

>Modern games have crafting and gear systems just to make more money because Skyrim and Witcher did it
100% this is the issue with AAA
if a game like Horizon, Spider-Man or Tsushima came out and they didn't have crafting, they're immediately seen as 'lesser' than the competition because those games all have crafting systems
this is why most AAA games shoehorn in 'RPG mechanics' where they don't belong, they'll throw everything and the kitchen sink into the game just so it seems content full, when all it results in is a giant mess of a game with no direction. they're just ticking boxes
this is why I adore Ueda and how he strips a game down to the bare essentials

I don't dislike RPG mechanics and stuff like that but yeah. In most modern games they have all this shit just to be more marketable and to pad out game length. It doesn't make the games better and only takes away from the experience most of the time. For me anyway. Even games like Nier and Dragons Dogma went too far with random collectables and stat related things.

For me it was Satorl Mash at night, it completely blew my mind.

"I can't wait for fully immersive hyper-realistic 3d environments."

"This sucks."

Too much shine, not enough soul.

SKIES OF MOTHERFUCKING ARCADIA

No other game gives has ADVENTURE on it like that one, it's a jrpg so you know the battles are kinda lame but my god, the setting and everything else is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC

One of the few japanese games in which the protagonist isn't a fucking emo faggot too, fuck, the whole cast is fucking fantastic!

I know you're being entirely sincere and that upsets me

>Doesn't post all the games that match that aesthetic
>Conan on the Left
>None of the Conan games on the Right.

>all the games that match that aesthetic
please show me. I already listed all the ones I know here but there's no modern AAA there

I thought the early scrapped concept art for Horizon was more interesting. I'll say that Horizon is probably the least visually bland IP of the AAA Sony ones though
anything else?

Attached: 345345.jpg (636x954, 165.08K)

Agreed, modern AAA just wants to make as much money as possible (in as little time as possible), so they create an abomination of a game that tries to cater to every damned demographic in the market, instead of actually trying to put together one game that respects a single (or maybe two) audiences.
In my opinion all forms of entertainment can only be good if they are niche, because it can then focus on the wants and needs of one (or two) genre(s) and its fans.

You should play that game if you haven't yet, camera autist-kun. I'm replaying it and constantly thinking back on all the adventure threads, it checks so many boxes. The dynamic camera, the linear progression with multiple points of no return, the heroes splitting and their paths intersecting, it's so good.

bottom left looks like Caelid in Elden Ring.

It sells

>indie
>no budget to make anything but 2D platformers, roguelites, walking sims etc
>AA
>doesn't exist outside of Eurojank
>AAA
>creatively bankrupt soulless products
the only light at the end of the tunnel is engines becoming so cheap and easy to use that indie devs can do much more

Attached: Screenshot (409).png (1920x1080, 1.9M)

This is disingenuous as fuck. Killeth thineself OP.

in what way? I could remake the pic using screenshots of games from if need be, it's just a smaller sample size and not all of the aesthetics in the left side are covered by games yet

Because your image
A. uses a much larger amount of images to make its point on the left side
B. Uses a larger sample size of sources on the left side.
C. Does not actually show any of the interesting scenery from the games on the right side, purposefully only showing the forests that look similar because it's TRYING to be disingenuous.
Fuck you.
