Only thing that comes to mind is with Darkwood a while back. Devs themselves put the game up for torrenting because they felt bad about some people who couldn't afford it/had to return it on Steam. That and apparently they were just kinda tired of all the key reselling that was going on, so they just put it out there.

Think I remember the Hotline Miami dev doing something similar with the sequel, but I can't remember the specifics.
