Played it years ago but never finished it because my saves got corrupted somewhere in the crypt level. Should I replay it RealRTCW or keep it vanilla?

I love how this game looks. Clean textures, simple geometry, comfy atmosphere.

both are perfectly fine - RealRTCW is very faithful to the original and probably more fun in current year with its buffed accuracy on all the weapons and QoL improvements

The hitscanners for RTCW have depth because the level design and weapon variety facilitates how you approach them. Also, getting the drop on them is an automatic hitstun animation for an easy kill. Circlestrafing an enemy or jiggling left and right while sprinting throws off their aim a bit. Leaning is allowed, but you can't shoot during, which is deliberate and keeps the game run and gun. Finally, RTCW was made with PC in mind, so sprinting doesn't render your gun unusable, you can reload at the same time, and you can even strafejump. You're always able to dish out damage and be on the move at the same time, using the environment to break line of sight. Even in the sound department, you can hear doors opening, enemies reloading, and footsteps approaching clearly and distinctly.

Only thing that's aged like milk is the damage telegraphing (you can riddle them with bullets and they won't flinch or react). Everything else is great work with a lot of passion and attention to detail put in.

I love RTCW, but I agree with this ranking. People are too hard on Wolf 3D nowadays. As simple as it is, the core gameplay is still groundbreaking and well-designed.

Played this for the first time last year and absolutely loved it. The amazing level design still holds up. What mods should I try on a replay?

It's got flaws, but I don't see how anyone could hate this game. 9/10

I agree, my first time playing Wolf 3D is around 2019 and it's my favorite in the series by far, i would have put spear of destiny higher if not for some bad levels bringing the expansion down.

i think to this day it has the best implementation of hitscan enemies, aside from the mutants of course, too bad developers didn't learn from it.

This, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the prime example I think of in the FPS genre of a game that does literally nothing revolutionary, but still comes away being a good game. It's like the opposite of a tech demo in the definition that most people use, but I hate that term anyway.

I doubt anyone actually dislikes Wolf3D. Yeah, it's old, but it's the foundations of the FPS genre itself. Even if Doom is way better, it's still something you can enjoy.

My dream Wolfenstein game would be to take RTCW and make it more arcadey like Wolf 3D. More enemies, sprint speed is default movement speed, hitstun on every shot like you mentioned.

Yep, I remember Drew Markham the director saying they're not going to be able to please everybody, but just wanted to make something that was easy to pick up and play and have fun. That was their vision, and they were steadfast in it. They even admitted in magazine articles that they weren't going to be setting any new standards in gore for the sake of the game's atmosphere, and while that may have aged the game looking back, I respect that they had their priorities of completing a polished game that didn't try to do too much other than be straightforward fun.

Wolfenstein 3D was revolutionary but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, RTCW is the beginning of the end of golden age FPS, still an 8/10 but Enemy Territory is one of the best games ever made

It's funny how the single-player got average, middling reviews when it came out, but looking back, it's become more beloved precisely because it didn't do much to break away from its contemporaries. Critics are always looking for groundbreaking achievements in technology or game design. Audiences just want a good game.
