SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI

no game will ever match the atmosphere of the original shin Megami Tensei.

i still haven't finished it but the catharsis of the credits theme is fucking unreal

While you're probably right, you have to appreciate SMTIV for trying to bring the series back into its cyberpunk roots.

And it's still stuck on 3DS
When will Atlus port their 3DS games to PC? They're too good to be left on that dead system

they stuck THIS on those tiny speakers

Why are Nocturne and V so hated?

How do I play this as a gaijin. Saw something recently that made me want to play it but I think I also read it was never released in the west

and I dont really care and will keep enjoying SMT.

The opening sets the haunting atmosphere so perfectly.

there's a group of people who look for flaws in everything. it confuses me.
if you play the first SMT, you'll realize just how little the series has changed over the years. If anything they're some of the most consistently quality games of any series next to kirby.
there's a translation that comes with a hack to make automapping permanent.

Nocturne is the final fantasy 7 of shin megami. It's not hated, it's over praised if anything. V is made fun purely on the looks of the mc. Both are good games. I still like digital devil saga and devil survivor better, though

Gunna have to agree, and that's a big part of it being my favorite SMT game. For me personally it's 1 > 2 > SJ > 5 > 4 > Nocturne, but they're all fine games. I did get bored with Nocturne towards the end but I stuck it out. Lucifer is way fucking harder in SMT2.

I don't hate Nocturne, it just was my least favorite. On its own it's still a great game, but compared to other SMT games it was a let down, even if 4 got way too easy after Medusa.

Play the GBA port. The translation is based on the official English iOS release from 2014 (that you obviously can't buy anymore, rip). Someone was working on a mod with the PS1 music but it seems like they gave up.

Music in general for the series is awesome.

anyone else go into the cathedral of shadows to fuse something and end up just reading all the demon descriptions while listening to the chill music?

SMTV fucked up real bad and added a formula that give enemies a percentage damage reduction depending on the level difference between them and you, once you outlevel them it flips to damage amplification instead. This is not the case for older SMT games as you can realisitcally kill enemies 40+ levels over you with good prep, no longer the case in SMTV. This change almost forces you to grind to approach/match a bosses level and clamps your demon choices really hard. People hate on Nocturne because it's a bit overrated; A good game to be sure but people praise it as the greatest JRPG to have ever existed and will ever exist.

Personally I like 2 more but I like the future sci-fi feel of it more

Well done user, well done. HOWEVER

Nocturne is overratted, not overhated.
V is just a case of NEW BAD, OLD GOOD

I hate atlus so much, I bought it and was playing then my fucking iphone updated and suddenly SMT wasn't supported anymore because it was a 32bit app and fucking atlus doesnt want to update it to 64bit

I heard this franchise had demons in it. Is it worth playing solely if you're into demonology?

>they hid this behind a status condition
youtu.be/wG1d34BFU6U

there's a ot of blurbs about the origins of the demons, so probably, yes.

Absolutely, look up Kazuma Kaneko's design books

1 and 2 devote a lot more attention to the actual demon lore and stuff while 3-5 basically throws it out for it's own thing. On the bright side, check out Digital Devil Saga if you're interested in a game centered around Buddist / Hindu lore instead of Christianity for once

I hate V because it's blatantly unfinished. It feels like the developers watched a YouTube video explaining why people liked Nocturne and tried to imitate that but gave up halfway through. I also hate the boring hub worlds that are not fun to traverse and the fact there are only two and a half dungeons.

The SNES version has an fanmade english translation, it's kind of buggy though, so make sure you also get the bug fix patch. There's also a patch that lets you access the map with the shoulder button, which is much more convenient than having to go through the menu for it.

If you don't feel like dealing with that, there's also the GBA version, which has Atlus's official translation, some quality of life improvements and some added content, and it's not as glitchy. The downside is that the audio quality is atrocious, like they straight up butchered the soundtrack. The smartphone version is no longer playable and the PS1 version isn't in english, so take your pick I guess.

is it really that hard to appreciate something for the things it does different? it made obvious tradeoffs, but i can't see many that weren't for a reason.

>I hate V because it's blatantly unfinished. It feels like the developers watched a YouTube video explaining why people liked Nocturne and tried to imitate that but gave up halfway through.
No, that's just what SMT 3 is like.

FUCKING BASED

YOU WILL NEVER KILL JEHOVA WITNESS AND LBERALS IN 3D WITH YOUR GUNS AND PEKEMON
THEY MISS THE ENTIRE POINT OF SMT

GOD IS AFRIAD OF HUMAN TECHNOLOGY THIS IS WHY HE DESTROY THE WORLD NOT MUH I TURN INTO A DEMON

The only thing unfinished about nocturne is the endings. The pacing is pretty strong and you move from boss to boss swiftly. You rarely need to grind and the dungeons ramp up in intensity at a smooth pace.

>The pacing is pretty strong
Are you fucking joking? Huge chunks of the game are you just wandering about with no real motivation

snees emulator and room like veryone did

is in english

youtu.be/A9Z5cvDlM9Q

Take me back...

fuck, ill buy that.

since persona 3 is my favorite of that series, i want more edgy faggot teen shit like SMT but holy fuck the gameplay looks so garbage and it's not on a single good platform so i just can't

There's an english patch, I think it's broken but there's a patch that fixes it too.

As someone that likes Persona 3 more than any mainline SMT game (I like mainline as well though), SMT 3 and Digital Devil Sage both have better gameplay and the later a story on par and maybe even better than Persona 3s.

SMT attracts a lot of hipsters and contrarians, so obviously they would hate III which is the most popular (non Persona) SMT game.
V is heavily inspired by III, so these hipsters hate it on principle.

it's on PC

stop playin with me man i've watched gameplay of the smt3 remake and it looks like 1 nigga made that shit for college in unity

Yay or Nay on the new Lucifer design

I played the SMT MMO for a while and I think it had a similar post apocalyptic atmosphere

>watch as your party members play the game for you!
Is being able to control your party members what makes the gameplay garbage?

Press turn is really simple but it's really satisfying. It's just a very slightly more complex version of Persona 3s combat anyways but without the AI controls (which I actually like)

The original one will always be the best. Also making him a robot like the other angels doesn't really make sense since he's the one that broke from just mindlessly following God. So it kind of cheapens all the other angel designs as a result

if only in 2022 there existed a way to play persona 3 with a mod that lets you control party members.. if only that existed.. if only..

There's also a way to put machine guns in Dark Souls, doesn't mean it's part of the actual game.

It's a shame the game kind of loses steam after returning from the diamond realm. The idea of post apocalyptic Tokyo is set well but it just never really feels as great as everything up to the nuke.
The Sega CD rendition of the credits theme is genuinely my favorite theme in the entire series. The original is good and there's some decent renditions of it elsewhere but this version just perfect.

>fuck you for not appreciating tedium!!!

>Why are Nocturne and V so hated?
V's story is so undercooked it's giving people salmonella. Gameplay wise it's great, except the level scaling damage shit, that's something Megami Tensei never fucking needed.

Cast in the name of God, ye GUILTY.

>gameplay = tedium
You should try out these things called "visual novels", they have even less tedium than Persona 3!

I like it visually but is right on the money when it comes to what the design actually conveys. That being said, if Lucifer had gained YHVH's knowledge, I do wonder if that tempering him out to something closer to neutral is what the design is trying to convey.

IS THE FUCKING BEST OF THE SERIES
>edgy garbage
return in your shithole colled reddit

are these games worth multiple playthroughs for the different routes and endings?

THE BEST OF THE BEST

Okay Tokyo millenium is a better setting but the characters, story and atmhosphere can0t be surpassed by nothing

No one hates Nocturne, it and Strange Journey are the literal peak of the series, but they hate Nocturnefags. Nocturne caught on enough with normalfags that the meme culture overshadowed the actual game. There's also the stupid "Nocturne has no story" meme that people pass around for whatever reason.

SMT2 is a much better better aged and better looking game tho

you don0t need it

there is a place where you can choose your aligment at the last moment and see different endings.

but you will miss some choice before it
