Legit this anime made me go and play DW8, had fun with the maps but I feel the story narrative was better in 7

I am embarrased to say that I have not played ANY Romance of the Three Kingdoms type games in YEARS. Let alone a Dynasty Warriors one. S-sorry. If I did, I would desire to play as Lu Bu. That lovable losers rascal.

Been playing Hyrule Warriors AoC and it's decent but has the problem all "modern" Musou games seem to have in that all attacks including basic melee strikes are now 20 foot wide area of effect vacuums so instead of sending 15 dudes flying after a well placed combo now if you're not schlorping up 100 dudes with every basic attack you're just wasting time and the size of the hordes and bowling-for-peons tactics just aren't special anymore.

Last "real" Dynasty Warriors games I played were DW8 followed by WO3U and the latter felt like a regression in most ways with the omission of R1- and Aerial musou attacks hitting the hardest for me.

6 had a lot of good qualities to it. 9 doesn't have much.

I never played DW6 vanilla only had DW6E on PS3 and I was triggered that Ma Chao didn't have a spear.

I liked the greatsword, but yeah, it didn't fit Ma Chao. Too bad it's his last original moveset, as Ma Chao's became a clone of DW6 Zhao Yun since then.

But Ma Chao and Zhao Yun in DW7E moveset are different despited both using spears. Well Ma Chao is just 'Spear, and Zhao Yun is Dragon Spear type.

Nothing ever matches up to samurai warriors 2 for me. I wish musou games would go back to the 6th gen slower and less inherently crazy style of gameplay.

The base spear in DW7 is based off of DW6 Zhao Yun's moveset. If you don't believe me, then see it for yourself: youtube.com/watch?v=RKhtH4Modh0

In 7XL, Zhao Yun got a new spear, the Dragon Spear, and Ma Chao and Jiang Wei stayed with the base spear. Jiang Wei got his double-edged spear from Multi-raid 2 in DW8 but Ma Chao didn't get a weapon change. In DW9, he's once again sharing the same moveset as Zhao Yun.
Warriors Orochi 3 is the closest that Ma Chao has got since DW6 Special to having an original moveset, as it combines the DW6 Zhao Yun spear with his charge attacks from pre-DW6 (and a few new ones to boot). Some of those attacks made it into DW8, but only if you held the charge attack button.

Are there any Romance of the Three Kingdoms RPGs

So how is the genre fairing? Any particular game I should emulate/pitate if I'm totally new to it?

Highly unlikely that it will ever happen. A majority of people prefer the crazy 1 vs 100000 brain dead easy gameplay.
The older games were slower, harder and less crazy due to console limitations not allowing there to be that many soldiers on-screen. With newer consoles being able to have a billion guys on-screen, the older gameplay would be almost impossible to play through, see DW4 on PC allowing you to adjust the amount of people on screen, meaning either you or the enemy gets stunlocked by an entire army of soldiers. It's fun, but very, VERY frustrating.
The average consumer prefers easy and mindless gameplay where you can do cool things with the press of a button.

I haven't played one since DW9's release. 9 Empires looks bad. Haven't felt like playing SW5. I want another Warriors Orochi but more 3U than 4.

Certain RoTK games use a SRPG battle system instead of the usual one like IX. There's the Dynasty Tactics games too.

Sengoku Basara 4 is by far the most fun musou game I've played but not knowing japanese hampers my enjoyment of it significantly

Legend of Cao Cao (and Legend of Lu Bu, a fanmod of Cao Cao) is pretty good SRPG. I heard that Destiny of an Emperor is really good but I haven't played it myself

Badly, most 'musou fans' just have a fascination with Three Kingdoms and Sengoku and just play for the characters(at least I do)

Play the DW8 PC port + watch DW7 story cutscenes on youtube on the side. If DW8 doesn't keep you playing, no other Musou will.

Supposedly SW4 has the best story of the SWs too, but only the vanilla that's on PS3/4 only, not 4-II on PC(that one is side stories only). SW2 is still pretty fun if you dont mind an older, less exaggerated game.

It's not a "three kingdoms" movie, it's a fantasy story uses "three kingdoms" imagery. Like Western fantasy stories borrowing imagery from Tolkien without being Middle-Earth.
