I thought they were shit but now I hear them come up as underrated gems. "Next gen" Tony Hawk games felt really strange to me back then.

THAW was more THUG2, people hate it because it segregated the multiplayer community but it's still a decent single player game
Project 8 was rushed and it shows but the mocapped animations look cool I guess

THAW is a kitchen sink scenario, it's good if you like just fucking around and doing stuff at your pace. If you like going through the story it's probably the only tony hawk game pre p8 that's as bad as thug1
P8 is shit but for different reasons depending on what platform you get it on, has some nice features but I would still not bother with it

The THUG 1 intro was the greatest thing in vidya history

I should have said, they're not "gems". They have some very minute things about them that are good (individual levels, individual gimmicks in isolation, etc) but they're very weak games overall.

After THUG added walking as a mechanic, Neversoft made the mistake of just adding more and more mechanics that didn't flow into other tricks or paralleled something in skateboarding IRL. Like, THUG2 allowed you to spraypaint for points, meaning you have to get off your board mid-combo, stop, quickly tag a wall, then get back on your board before the clock ran out.

The Bert slides in THAW very nearly could have worked if they gave a speed boost or something, but they never did. Pool skating in general and all the fun speed related shit that comes along with it was never a thing in these games, so adding in a very pool-y move that was usually used to end a combo IRL just didn't work. They tried to rectify that in Proving Ground, but a myriad of other issues made pool carving play like total shit and most people don't even remember it being a feature.

Honestly, what they should have done (and hopefully will do if Vicarious Visions get to make another one) is just expand how walking works so that it wasn't the hard snap in and out of a different movement mechanic. Do it during different moves and maybe you do fun street plants, vaults, no complies, freestyle-y things, etc, so that if you're moving at speed you can use that momentum for fun shit and different types of gaps and obstacles. THAW tried to make the walking mechanics "parkour", but they were functionally the same moves.

This summary is pretty legit, especially the points on P8's visual presentation.
I guess the games are fine if you really need a 2000s nostalgia trip, although Skate and EA BIG games can give you that and much more

That was the other thing; while Tony Hawk games were stagnating and trying to break onto a new gen Skate came out with a whole new style that people really loved. And they had far superior online features to boot.

THAW'S soundtrack is far from the best, but it has some gems, like Frank Black's Los Angeles

Unsane is pretty abrasive compared to a lot of the earlier soundtracks. Probably would have fit nicely in one of the later games. Committed is a great song but it does feel slightly out of place in the THPS1 soundtrack

pop punk was a new genre cooked up by music labels to steal the spotlight from the underground punk scene in both the UK and USA. this shit happens all the time.
